Android Geocaching Apps

Post by CraigRat » 01 December 10 6:06 pm

Givent theres a couple of Android threads, I thought it would be good to start one concentrating on Android related apps that us geocaches would be interested in.

Apps I think are worth a look:

Geocaching Specific:
Geohunter
Geobeagle
c:geo
OpenGPX
Groundspeak's Geocaching App
Geocaching Tools (might help solve some of those puzzles)

Mapping:
OSMAnd
Oruxmaps (Similar to OziCE)

Websites:
Appbrain
Androlib

Add your faves here too!

Maverick is pretty handy as a basic mapping app.

GPS Status is also a handy app to have around.

c:Geo impresses me more and more each time I use it....fantastic for a free app

Just been using OruxMaps and I'm hooked.

Here's one of my Ozi maps converted and running in it (source map was a reasonably poor scan of a 100k map):

I'll have some tutorials up for this app over here over the next week.

This is the app I have been looking for for AGES!! (trying not to rave about it like a lunatic)

Rmaps is a mapping software I'm using. It links in nicely with geohunter. I don't know if anyone has had any experience with it though. You have to create maps for it using mobile atlas creator though.

Well, got my Galaxy today, put Cachemate on there and um, what has happened to import speeds with this app? My Poor Palm used to process the import file with 5k records in a few minutes, the same number of records has taken just under 4 hours and it is still going!!

That's raw GPX's I am importing, too tired to stuff around with a dos based converter they have, especially when it does not understand *.gpx as an import file parameter.

Alpha version 0.1 of Oziexplorer is now out.

I have loaded it onto the Nuvifone with NSW topo maps and gone for a drive. Tracks well, very little lag on speed register but not a lot of function just yet. Good solid start though.

With ozi for andriod and this app (thanx Webby) http://teamviewer.com/download/mobile.aspx makes one of these http://www.telstra.com.au/bigpond-inter ... 7187500900 probably one of the best caching devices that you could want 8) this way with teamviewer you only have the needed info onboard, anything else can be taken straight from your machine at home, love it =D>

What version of Android is it running? Froyo (2.2.x) runs heaps faster than earlier versions.

That said; there's a few things that my old TX ran at least as fast as my Nexus One, especially video files.

Yes, updated to 2.2.

I posted to the Cachemate forums, and the Dev said that would be about right. Gone are the days of a quick update before running out the door me thinks.

IF, someone came up with a GUI to at least allow you to select all the GPX files in the one folder and feed that to his converter, I'd love to try that.

New version of cachemate is taking some getting used to thats for sure.

c:geo is fantastic! I loving it. And it's free!

Cachemate worked so much better in my Palm T|X, so I'm still using it for paperless caching. I tried the Windows Mobile Cachemate, I did not like it. I tried the Android Cachemate, same problem. I could not add anything to the description for multi caches, eg A=6. So back to Palm for that!

The Apps I have found useful for Geocaching on my Garmin Asus A50 are:

WhereYouGo - A great app that allows you to do Where I Go caches.

The official Geocaching.com app

GeoHunter - Actually use this one for multi's as it easy to edit the location of the waypoint to the next one.

Hintdecoder

Code Tables

Barcode Scanner

GC Tools

Some other Apps which have been useful for conditions in the field so to speak, have been:

Tide Prediction - Shows tides for anywhere or closest to where you are

Aussie Weather Radar - Can see the rain radar for the area you are in

Toilet finder - Is not overly comprehensive at the moment but still has a fair few on there

Sundroid - Sunrise/set times for your location; and

Zombie, Run! - If you are walking back from a cache and want a bit of fun, this app shows you on a map as well as various Zombies in the area that you have to avoid. If they spot you, they change colour and come after you
