GSAK Badly formed UTF-8 character in stream

Post by gmj3191 » 22 August 10 12:14 pm

I'm getting this message when I import a GCA GPX file into GSAK, and the problem causes the import to terminate.
GSAK doesn't handle the problem well, and it gives a text box with an abort option which doesn't seem to work all that well, as when you choose the abort option the box won't go away.

From the GSAK log, the next cache to be loaded was cache GA2505. I tried to load that cache as a GPX by itself and got the error, confirming it was the fly in the ointment.

I then wrote a query excluding all caches by Phetlern which knocked it and two others out, and the reamainder all loaded.

I think the error is caused possibly by the characters in the Phetlern log used to represent degree symbols.

I'm not sure if this is a GCA problem, a GSAK problem or a Phetlern problem :?

This problem has now been fixed.
Apologies for the inconvenience, it's all part of the internationalisation of characters which obviously still needs some tweaking. This looks like the final fix.
Thanks also for the great analysis at your end, it really helped nail down the bug to the right place in the code.

We worked out that The Shopper's Relief was knocking over both our Garmins, so we had to go out and do it to get it off the list.

This cache didn't go via GCA to our units. It was PQ->GSAK->GPS.

I'm only psting this because it is also a GMJ one.

Hi Squalid(s)
Can you please be a bit more precise about what "Knocking over both our Garmin's" means.
I've just loaded that cache into my 60 CSx from GSAK and directly from GC.com using the <Send to my GPS> option and encountered no issues either way.
I thought the apostrophe might have been an issue but there are heaps of caches containing those.
If there's anything I can do to fix the issue I will but I can't see anything so far.

gmj, just a quick one: Do you use Microsoft Word for your cache descriptions or just the online page?

Word pastes strange things in and theres quite a few GPS units that don't like the 'special' formatting.

Nope, I don't use Word for that.
I probably used Frontpage to generate the HTML, but the same things could happen I guess.
If we can get a better idea of what is happening then we can investigate the HTML and see what the problem is.
At this stage I don't know what the problem was or what type of GPS is being used, and I know it's working ok on my 60 CSx which doesn't take any of the cache description on board.
If it's a more modern GPS like an Oregon or 62 there's not much I can do from my end.

I just downloaded it to my Ipod Touch using the Groundspeak application and that worked without a problem.

Is anyone else having issues with this cache, especially if you use a GPS which downloads all the details?

Hi GMJ,

Here's a better description of what happened:

On the colorado, when selecting from the geocache screen, any caches on the list before yours would display their details fine/ Yours and after would show a blank screen for the details, and lock up.

The oregon was simillar, but would hang for 20 sec, and then allow the back button, raher than lock up.

It was second nearest our home, so I quite quickly worked out which one was causing the grief. Lucky it wasn't number 392 or something.

Can you load it directly from gc.com?

Here's the HTML if anyone is able to see any issues in there ... it does tend to get a bit verbose when you use a WYSIWYG editor rather than just roll your sleeves up like C@W probably does

premier shopping centres at the time of its opening in 1968. It was
quite a small shopping centre with only a few stores such as a Myer
department store, Woolworths supermarket, and a special roof
garden.<br />
During Southland's history, many renovations and facelifts have
shaped the centre, such as the first expansion in 1987 and the
development of a Village Cinemas complex and food court in 1990.
The rooftop garden was removed upon first redevelopment and was
replaced with a third level of stores.<br />
In March 1998, a major upgrade commenced with an expansion of the
centre to an additional site across the Nepean Highway, via a
bridge with shops on it. The former cinemas and food court were
demolished, and the wide, multi-level pedestrian bridge was added,
linking the old core of the centre to the former Cheltenham Market
site on the other side of the highway. During this time, the Myer
anchor moved from the original to the new site. Construction also
included a new larger cinema complex and a youth-oriented mall
called The Street, which opened in April 1999. The development was
completed by late 1999.</font></font></span></p>
