For those that live in areas mapped by this company.

http://www.nearmap.com/nearmap/photomap-coverage.aspx

The resolution of these images has to be seen to be believed.

The data appears to be free for personal non commercial use

"Free Personal/Community Licence

Using Garmin Custom maps - you can create .kmz files for downloading to your Garmin Colorado or Dakota.
A slow and cumbersome process, but worth the effort

Check out Nearmap - the images are stunning

The resolution is typically 7.5cm
Thats seriously crazy resolution.
I love their maps, plus they allow the OSM oproject to use their images to trace roads etc, so they get ticks all round.

Now, I patiently wait for them to do a flyover of tassie :-)

That's pretty good resolution. Haven't checked but I wonder how accurate the lat/long is? You could almost spot some caches using that if not under trees. I can spot a square brick in the backyard covering a sewer pipe outlet.

Has anyone as yet worked out an easy way to downlaod the tiles so they can be used on the GPS?

I have looked through the forums here and on Nearmaps but I cant seem to find an easy answer #-o Any help would be certainly appreciated :D

Found an interesting one on the latest google earth images where they have obviously stitched two passes together. At the park to the north side of Central Station you can see the southern side of the buildings, then the northern side of the others. Through my direction calculations out by about 15 degrees.

This can be done easily with the correct software,

Get yourself Mobile Atlas Creator. a free java program.

Learn how to use Mobile Atlas Creator and download the tiles you want from the area selected.

They work great if done correctly, Much better than that Google earth image thing, what ever they call it, charging people $40.00 per year to use.
