Uniden UHF Transceiver Sale at DSE
Just noticed in the DSE flyer that the new Uniden UHF Transceivers (D1773) are on sale for $58 for the pair!
Damn cheap if you haven't got some for caching yet.

An excellent buy,
We have a pair of the cheap Unidens UH036 and use Nickel Metal Hydride rechargeables in them.
We have found the useful range to be approx 750m
As with all UHF comms range is line of sight
You may get 3kms range over water/hilltop, but we have never tried.
We find 750m range more than enough as Meredith and I are rarely separated by more than 200m when caching

Yes, AAA batteries...
I have the UH040 which uses AA batteries - great I thought, I can share batteries with all my other gear. But after having the rechargables fail on us TWICE in the field (due to self discharge etc), I just put alkalines in them and they have been on the same set for almost a year now I think and still show "full charge".
These Unidens are very frugal on batteries, I'd use Alkalines so you don't have to worry about flat batteries.
Actually, I think I'd gladly sell my UH040s for $58 (cost me $200) and get a pair of these instead. I'd rather have the smaller size, even if they have less battery capacity.

Gotta watch those no-name UHF units though, some are decent some are are bad, really bad.
The Uniden ones have a known reputation for good build quality, as well as Australian based servicing and support.
The headsets would be handy for abseiling, always wanted a set of those. The UH036 does not support a headseat/VOX
