Blackberry Geocaching?

Post by Prab » 11 July 09 4:18 pm

Can anyone tell me what application to install to try caching using my Blackberry? Is "Geocache Navigator" a good app? Can it be used in Australia and on the Telstra network? Is it worth trying or should I just go out and by a ddicated device?

Thanks, from a very newbie.

I use Cacheberry http://cacheberry.com/ for cache info, and a gps receiver for navigation.

You could try using the free trial of Cacheberry to find a few caches, while you decide whether to buy a dedicated gps receiver.

Here's their forum thread on how the compass works. I haven't tried it.

Thanks a lot for that, I have tried to download CacheBerry but get an error message about invalid digital signatures so I am trying to get a fix for that.

Found this after seeing a couple of positive posts about it on the Blackberry forums. It's free:

Cacheberry Rules. A great app.

Blackstar I have tried but it cannot load more than 200 caches and it is not as clever.

You get what you pay for.

I've been using Blackstar for several months now and love it!

Pros:
- It's free!
- No need to convert to WPT through GSAK and OzE - just load up a GPX file
- Doesn't appear to be any limit to the number of caches you can load.
- All cache details, hints and logs are available on a second screen
- One click takes you to the cache website where you can enter a log online - saves data entry later
- Seems to be slightly more accurate than my Garmin 76 CSx (probably more a function of the BB GPS)
- Can add, delete, edit co-ords e.g. for multis
- Everything on one device
- Don't need to carry spare batteries for the GPS because I charge the BB while driving.

Cons:
- Text uses a very small font - sometimes hard to read. (Maybe it's time I got glasses!)
- If you have a lot of caches loaded it takes a while to list waypoints because it calculates distance to all them
- No compass in the BB so you have to move for the pointer to show the right direction
- No mapping

Wishlist:
- Display caches on something like Google Maps
- Bigger text
- Configurable fields

Overall a nice easy-to-use piece of software. I haven't used the Garmin for months.

Actually Blackstar does have a mapping feature but it uses Blackberry Maps which are not very detailed in Oz.
Blackstar can't display WPs on Google Maps Mobile and there doesn't appear to be an easy way to do it. GMM is not as fully featured as Google Earth.

I deleted BB maps from the unit when I installed Google Maps.
When I tried to re-install them last week it says that my service provider (Optus) doesn't support them.
When I first bought my Blackberry Bold the maps worked fine.

Does anyone know how to get Blackberry Maps working again?
