Track logs from Garmin --> file --> Ozi ??

Post by Geof » 01 April 09 9:42 am

I want to record a track log on my GPS and export it as a file then email it to someone else to put into Oziexplorer. I'v never downloaded tracklogs before. Can anyone give me a brief rundown on whats needed as far as file types etc.

I'd assume you don't have Oziexplorer then by the question? :P

The best way for compatibility is use the GPX file format when saving the file. Ozi will read it (and several other different formats) easily, and this allows you to choose the software of your liking for the downloading from the GPSr.

Some modern GPSrs eg Oregon, Colorado etc store the trackfiles internally as a GPX file which saves on intermediary software requirements. 8)

Dependant on the type of GPSr/budget etc, numerous options are available for downloading the trackfile including Mapsource, G7toWin (my favourite alternative option), etc.

Hope this helps.

I save track files all the time, from bushwalking but you need a program to download the file.
I use ozi explorer to download the track and save in a folder I've created. You can then change the file extension to whatever you want for the program that is going to use it.

Not sure if you can download track files, routes or waypoints if you have no programs at all.

Geof, the brand/model of GPSr would help with suggesting the best strategy.

Not all GPSr's have memory cards etc....

GPSBabel can convert files between different file formats.

Thanks for the advice so far. To answer a few questions:

Its a yellow etex

No I don't have Ozi

I do have GSAK 6.what ever the last one was. No trouble uploading waypoints but don't know about track / routes.

The end aim is to add new roads / tracks to a map.

Penguin ware also considered as thats my flavor of preference these days for 95% of the time.

Hi Geof,

Use Mapsource (it's a free download if you didn't already know) to get the tracklog from the Etrex and save it as a .gpx file. You can use Babel to convert it to various other formats. although a .gpx is probably what you need. I'm surprised you're not an avid Ozi user - it's a fantastic tool. If you're getting into mapping, you may want to check the Open Street Map (OSM) project. I usually save my tracklogs and either use them to update the OSM maps myself or upload them so others can do it.

Hi Geof,

I think your unit only holds 1536 track points. which might be good for about 100kms if you are driving

gpsbabel is the right tool then

If you are using ubuntu or debian it is in the repositories, just do a sudo apt-get gpsbabel and bob's your uncle.

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install gpsbabel
did the trick :)

Now lets see if I can drive it....
