I believe this thing has a mind of it's own. For the last 4 days it has been working perfectly. Mind you I am with rellies in Melbourne and with a BB connection readily available to use if required. However, I have been turning off prior to changing batteries, before I may have just reefed them out!!
Still at the moment I am as happy as.

Hi Mal , garmin released another unit software update a few days ago, it will now let you run a 4Gb card.

Well can you believe it?
It's working--every time!
Seems as if I have finally cracked the code and came up with the goods.
Thought I would report the good news and thank all who have had some input. Especially Gibbo whose offer I very nearly took up.
