Garmin vista HCx can't coomunicate with Oziexplorer

Post by tronador » 28 October 08 9:52 pm

I just got my new GPS but it doesn't seem to work with Ozi explorer.
Fails to communicate with the GPS. I have changed the configurations in Ozi from the Garmin Etrex to Garmin Vista but still nothing happens the only thing i can see that might be causing this problem is the version of Ozi i have only seems to communicate via a COM port but my Vista uses a USB cable.

Now what? Please help!

Get Franson GPSGate.
You can use a USB GPS and it can talk to Ozi, a wireless network monioring program like Netstumbler and to a certain extent GSAK (Get center point from GPSr). The program sets up virtual COM ports for your other apps and you can use them all at the same time.

Not sure you can use the etrex 'x' series, as they dont have an NMEA output?

Thanks Swampy but i'm not familiar with any of this. what is Franson GPS Gate? Is it an adapter? I'm afraid I need further help in plain English.

Yes USB driver is loaded and the cable works fine because I can download waypoints straight off the cache page via the send to GPS button

In Ozi when you open the configuration page (File -> Configuration) next to the GPS tab you will see a tab marked COM. This is used to set the parameters, for example my USB to serial adaptor comes up as COM4 (most commonly it would be COM4 or COM5).

You can check this under Control Panel with the adaptor plugged in. If running XP select System, choose the Hardware Tab and open Device Manager. There should be an item (you may need to scroll down) that says Ports (COM and LPT). Click on the + symbol and it will open and say something like Serial on USB port (COM4).

If you are running Vista I can look on the work PC and see how it displays.

OK I think I know what's wrong. I've been using a very old version for the last 3 years with my little yellow etrex and everything worked just fine.

I have upgraded the software and now I get the USB box and the PVT box. My maps still load as usual. Just waiting to see if it will now communicate with the GPS

The result soon.
