iPhone geocache software

Post by KevL » 08 September 08 3:17 pm

I was informed today that there is now a geocaching application for the iphone. It's available from the iTunes store for $17.99 apparently.
I don't have an iPhone but that could change if this app turns out ok.
Combining phone with paperless caching means 1 less gadget to carry.

I read that the iphone GPS performance was woeful, ok to put you on a map but not good enough for geocaching. There's a whole lot of devices on the market that will do what you want to do, look at phones running Windows Mobile and Nokias.

I had heard the same However:
If you look at the software, you will find its performs a similar function to gpx sonar etc. It displays the gpx files, cache description and logs etc. It doesn't take you to the cache. As such, the iPhones gps performance would be irrelevant.

True, but if you're wanting convergance, why not replace your hand held GPS while you're at it?

There's also another iPhone app for geocaching, called Geopher. Reviews on it are dismal, though.

I suppose it all depends on what feature set your looking for. The iPhone has a couple of features not available with other phones particularly integration with some other apple devices/ software.

My original post however was more by way of letting those with iphones know that software was available that until now hadn't been reported here.

Keep the info coming! I am waiting for some good software that lets me view gpx files. Doesn't need to be integrated with the gps. I already have a functioning one of those. I am posting this from my iPhone  so you can see why I'm interested.

If you have a Symbian phone, I cannot say enough good things about Smart GPX - http://www.smartcaching.de/index.html

Been using it for 12 months on my Nokia N80 and love it.

I'm glad I brought a Colorado 300, I can load the gpx file straight to it.

I posted this using my laptop :P

I just loaded the new version of the iphone/itouch software last night ver 2.1. It now allows you to store pdf files for offline viewing on the email client.

Before the upgrade none of the files attached to emails could be viewed on my ipod Itouch unless you where connected to a network (ie WIFI) which was hopeless out on a caching hunt. So now I can download the pdf files for each cache page and then email then to myself for latter offline viewing.

Its just a shame that I can not do pocket quiries to output as PDF files.
I guess that would use heaps more bandwidth and processing power on gc.com......

BTW there is another iphone/itouch caching program coming out latter this month called geode. From what i can gather it would be great for paperless caching with an Itouch.

Spindoc, thanks for the tip on Smartcaching. Now have what I feel is the perfect paperless option!!

Stick with my Explorist 500 to do the finding, but use my Nokia 6110 Navigator with Smart Caching to read the exported caches from GSAK. It's a good way to save on the data used by Trimble's Geocache Navigator, and get to read the logs, etc
