The basic Etrex seems so popular...

Discussion about software such as GSAK, OziExplorer etc, as well as all things hardware, GPSrs, laptops, PDAs, paperless caching, cables etc

You also forgot that really important feature: best time to hunt and fish!

Anyone want a cheap camo? I got one in the shop, more out of curiosity than any demand from customers. Hunt/fish is a nice add-on but is not a real selling point in its own right.

My current view on the market is;
Below$300 - 1. Magellan 315 closely followed by eTrex. Geko 101 well behind.
$300-$500 - 1. GPS72; 2. eTrex Legend for the mapping; 3. eTrex summit/Geko 301 if you want electronic compass etc; 4. Sportrak/eTrex Venture both good units but outclassed for their price; 5. eTrex Camo :x
$500 on up. You're getting into the fancier units here and the GPS60C/CS are setting the standard with the colour screen, sturdy construction, turn-by-turn navigation, huge battery life, plus the Geocaching mode. However, the Magellan mapping is much better in the country and this is a significant plus for the Meridian/Sportrak range. I think the Garmin76 series has been left behind by the excellence of the 60 series and the superior mapping on the Magellans.
Above $1000 - I'm reserving judgement on the iQue 3600, the Street Pilot 3610 is a good city vehicle GPS but is not really a geocachers tool.
These views are subject to change with price fluctuations/firmware upgrades/new releases etc.
My two bobs worth.

The eTrex has a street price of $200 and under, does this put it in another category or ahead of the Magellan 315?

Current recommended retail for eTrex is $257, current recommended retail for Magellan 315 is $275, that's what I based my categories on.

Etrex Legend. Great unit. Love the map - have used Geoscience Australia data and converted using various software. Good size, good battery life and fools muggles into thinking its a mobile phone. A step up from the basic model. Five stars.

I've got me a GPS60C - and yes it's VERY nice - i'm still contemplating on getting maps - which will only make it better.. it has 6 games too!! (just incase you need to pass some time waiting for muggles to move??) - only had it a little over a week, so haven't managed to use it geocaching yet... screen is great, colour is fantastic - hours of fun just fiddling with it let alone using it!!

I have a basic eTrex, my main concern was low price, low price, low price and data cable port, since none of the smaller handheld ones come with numeric keypad, i am not going to enter 50+ waypoints scrolling with 3 keys!!

my $0.00 worth ($0.02 with round-down, see is worth nothing really!!) 8)

I've been running around with the "Scouts" Yellow eTrex's lately, and my ever trusty eTrex Venture (which today turns into a Legend!!).

I find that if you want to type in a point, the Venture is sooo much easier, the joystick makes data entry a lot faster. Apart from the screen res, that would be the biggest difference I notice.

Also the lack of the trip meter screen is a loss. The yellow is handy where it lists the nearest waypoints and their distances. The Venture only lists the points, you have to go another screen in to get the distances.

My other 5c

Sam
