Contours Australia V2.00 for the Garmin GPS

Post by Dooghan » 14 August 08 12:12 pm

10m contour maps for all of Australia for free. The maps are based on the SRTM data which does have it's problems but still should be useful. I just don't have the time or data to fix up the problems areas. If they are not up to your standards then you could go and buy Oztopo or Topo Plus.

These maps are a transparent contour layer which you use with other maps like City Nav, Metroguide, Shonky maps, etc. 10m are shown out to 300m zoom, 50m from the 500m to 1.2km zoom and 100m from the 2km and above when the GPS is detail level is set normal. Set your GPS detail to Most and you will see the 10m contours out the 1.2km zoom.

Got to thank festy for sending me the source data in the format I needed. I did have the means but it was a very manual process.

The installer can be downloaded from the following links.

That looks awfully sweet. When you say problems, what sort of problems?

Also, how many map tiles make up all of Australia?

Cheers

177 maps in the set. The problem is missing data like in the below pic.

just wondering how the GPS treats these maps, I saw the Colorado when it zoomed in show contour marks, is this a common feature for Garmin devices..
I will check that out later when I manage to download the new maps.
and thanks

That is a bit of a problem, how wide spread is it though? All over australia, just in bits? 177 tiles is much better than the commercial 10mtr product I am using, nearly 3000tiles from memory for that product.

It's just some places across Australia.

I notice that i cannot disable CA2 on my Oregon (the other mapsets i can)....is this due to it being a transparent layer and/or its level, or is there another reason for the always on issue?

On my 60CSX I have 2 transparent mapsets. I find it likes to name both under the one name on the GPS. So to turn them both off I just got to turn off the one mapset. It's the only thing I can think of.

Contours are great. They load just fine on a PC with Garmin MapSource, but I can't get them to display at the same time as CityNavigator etc. Is this possible? Maybe the transparency only works on the GPSr itself?

The Mapsource software will only display one mapset at a time, be it CityNavigator, Contours Australia V2.00 etc. Transparency is only shown on your GPSr. Image

how do load them onto the GPSr ?
i tried using mapsource, but it seemed to overwrite/delete the city navigator maps and leave me with a base map and the contours :?: :?:

In Mapsource, you need to select ALL map tiles from ALL mapsets you want to load, anything on the GPS gets wiped when a new mapset is uploaded.

When you load up maps to your gps you cannot choose just one mapset as it deletes all maps on the gps before loading the new set.
In mapsource you must select all the mapsets you want on the gps and upload them all at the same time.
