Linux software

Post by KevL » 18 May 07 6:44 pm

G'Day everybody, new here so be gentle.

I'm only new to geocaching, 6 found, using an Etrex Legend.
One of my first problems was I use Ubuntu and there is very little software available to communicate between linux and garmin gps's to manage maps and waypoints.

I instaled win xp in Virtual box and bought a usb to serial converter to try to get a solution. While waiting for said converter to arrive I searched high and low in GPS and Linux forums.
Deep in the bowels of gc.com I found reference to Qlandkarte.
I found and installed it.
It Works!:D
I can upload maps and waypoints, download tracks and waypoints. It uses gpx files and maps such as Shonky's and T4A.
A leap forward for Linux users.
It still has a common problem with maps though, you can't upload just an additional map without deleting all the others you already have loaded. You have to load the whole lot each time. Mapedit does the same thing in windows though.

Hope this helps some

Kev

I'm running Kubuntu.

I have no real interest in maps but i have bookmarked this thread because it will come in very handy if I change my mind. I'm about to upgrade from laptop to tabet pc so am unsure if I'm sticking with kubuntu.

Thanks for posting your findings. I appreciate it.

That would be the beast.

Kev

Late edit:
There is slight bug mentioned on the page above. When the program is first opened there i no map window on the right as there should be. If you grab the right side of the window with your mouse and drag left you will find it. It seems to stay there once done

I'd better get my app finished!!!
(I'll be calling for some linux beta testers soon)
http://cacheblitzer.com

I don't know if I'll do mapping in it yet.... I'm not really up to speed on that side of things!

Looking good craigrat. (Typo on "Virtiual" in the excluded cache types.)

If it's easy to use with a clean interface it should be a winner.

I found and installed it.
It Works! :D
I'v got ubuntu 6.06LTS
Have downloaded the deb for feisty from getdeb. Should that work?

Have also got libusb-0.1.12.tar.gz

Which of the other 2 required prerequisites should I get and is the above file the right one for the job?

Thought I'd ask before downloading the wrong thing again on dialup

The package installer gives me a "dependancy not satisfiable: libc6" error so I presume that means those extras are not already installed.

Totally off topic, but go Myth TV (www.mythtv.com) 8)

Runs all of my TV, Home theater, weather, internet radio, etc, plus i can grab my torrents and watch them straight away using torrent flux

You need all 3 dependencies to get Qlandkarte to work. Check Synaptic, I think they should be there. Search for the names given on the Qlandkarte website.

Ah thanks :D . I'v had a look in synaptic. I see a number of qt4.1.X refs but not the required qt4.2.x Is it time to upgrade OS or do I do something else?

Second question (geting a bit ahead of my self here) what the heck do we do with an exe file like shonkymaps, t4a etc.

Seems your reply fell throught the "posts since last visit" funtion so I'v only just found it again :) I'v clicked the notify me box now

Geof

Have you tried running the .deb you downloaded. You may need to change permissions on it to allow it to execute. Right click on it, permissions, and tick the allow execute as a program box. Then double click the file. It should download the required dependencies. The current version of Ubuntu 7.10 has QT4 ver 4.3.x.

For Shonkymaps, not much choice here but to find a windows machine, install and then copy the folders with the maps to your linux machine.

Download Wine (it's in the repos).. its a Windows Emulator that let you run SOME windows apps (it isn't 100%).... see how you go

<p>
If you're just requiring the actual shonky map .img files by themselves I can supply a zip file with these in. It might save you trying to find a Windoze machine to run the full install.

Let me know if you think this would be useful. Always happy to encourage and support Linux and other 'free' software users in any way I can.
