Making more use of my PDA
Is there any of these utilities available for download or do I need a compiler to make my own? eg a=1,b=2 calculationsBear_Left wrote:Plus a few more occasionally useful things:
(I won't give specific programs since mine are all PalmOS progs)
-BASIC (or Forth or c or language of choice) for doing simple tasks in the field. (Adding up the "A=1, B=2.." types, doing ROTn, Vignere codes, etc., etc.)

Not just a Palm; anything that can run Java!JackHenry wrote:If you own a Palm device, try this <br><br>

I have a memo on my Palm with a list of "Speedfreak ideas" and I'd forgotten where it came from! I used it as ideas for Basic programs!
Requires Palm OS 3.5 + ie the Java VM MIDP , I have OS 3.3 .. oh well I could try and find a compiler and write my own...JackHenry wrote:If you own a Palm device, try this <br><br>

now that I have started using PDA in Caching.. I see its an improvement... the only beef is I only have two hands.. Do other people suffer from having to juggle devices around. If I had lots of $$ I would preffer an integrated GPS in PDA so I could just be holding one device and a built in Camera would be good too.
What sort of prep work do people do before they set off .. load cachemate study cache or just hope they have all info before leaving..

Usual routine goes:
When one of my 4 PQ,s comes through, open it up, decompress it and import it into GSAK. (4 PQ covers date ranges of caches in SA)
I sometimes manually add the gpx file for a single cache.
I then turn on my filter which is basically all caches Zytheran has not found in SA.
From within GSAK I then export a mps file for opening in Mapsource later.
From within GSAK I then export a gpx file for importing into GoogleEarth. (maybe)
From within GSAK I then export a pile of html files into the sync. directory of the PDA.
From within GSAK I then upload all these waypoints into the Garmin Legend.
When I know where I might be going I can open Mapsource, and load in the mps file which shows cache type by icon and a good map for driving. This is then printed out and I usually use the 1km scale. I could take a screengrab but an A4 is much driver when driving.
I ensure the PDA has synced. (this happens automatically as soon as new files are put into the sync. directory on the desktop by the export)
If any caches are out bush I'll use Google Earth with the GPX export to work out a plan of attack and find tracks and access.
So by the time I leave I have a paper map for driving help, all the cache notes in HTML format on the PDA for use by a browser and all the locations (well, the first 1000 of them) loaded into the PDA.
I write my finds and DNF's and notes in pencil on the bottom blank half of the map preintout, having being burnt with GPX Sonar twice.
This routine is probably done once per week to have everything up to date.
If a new cache comes out and I want a FTF I'll just look at it's location on Google Map, (print map if unfamiliar area), print the cache details out and drive. I'll load the coords into the GPS when I get there if needed.
When I find the cache I flag it as found on the GPS by changing it's icon to the "Geocache found" one, and delete it some time after logging online.
In summary the html export and sync. to the PDA is the easy bit.
