Free turn-by-turn navigation on selected Nokia phones
A few weeks ago I got a couple of emails from Nokia saying I could now have free turn-by-turn navigation on my E71 for life by updating to Ovi Maps 3.0.
Eventually I got around to updating my version of Maps, downloading the Australian maps and voice guidance and trying it out. I can't speak more highly of it! I usually use a Navman S30 for this sort of thing and can say that Ovi Maps is 99% as good as the Navman for its voice guidance, but has the wood on my cheap Navman by allowing me to navigate directly to geocaches (or as close as it can get me by road) on the proviso that I have exported them to the phone's landmark database using SmartGPX.
The only downside is that when you don't have phone service you can't search for your destination by typing the address in free form text. This is the only time is uses data.
When you have he phone in map display mode the landmarks are starred on the map as POIs allowing you to watch for caches as you drive around.
As far as I can tell it is only the Symbian S60 3rd edition phones that can run it. My wife's 2nd edition phone can't run it.

The free maps are cool aren't they & with SmartGPX, even better.
Love to know how you export geocaches to the Landmark DB though. Looked at their website and it seems only available to S60 v3 not V5 like the N97 uses??

On the SmartGPX list of caches (filtered or otherwise) select Options -> Landmarks -> Export to Landmarks DB. This will export the selected cache.Echo wrote:The free maps are cool aren't they & with SmartGPX, even better.

If you have Marked some or all of the listed caches, then it will export all marked caches.

It works with the N97 but be aware if you have a lot of caches in the Database it can take some time to add them to the Landmarks database.
You may need to mark the Geocaches that you want to export 1st Echo....

The only options I have are these.
Maybe I'm running a different version? I'm using V1.1 of SmartGPX.

As I was missing these features also, I went for a bit of a look-see. These features are actually part of an Add-On to SmartGPX, as I have just discovered! See here. Very Nice!

Ah. Yes, well it is the add-on that integrates with your GPS chip and I installed them both at the start, although the whole process you have to go through to install the add-on is a little cumbersome.SG-3 wrote:As I was missing these features also, I went for a bit of a look-see. The good news is that if you install both the add-on and program to your memory card they both survive firmware updates and even a remote wipe of your phone (assuming the card is remove prior to wipe).
