A Proposal for Revamping the Stars

Discussion about the Geocaching Australia web site

Should we change the colours of the stars to the scheme outlined in this post?

Yes. The new system is more comprehensive.

No. I like my 5 shiny red stars and want to keep them as is.

Good suggestion, Geof. The simplest suggestion escaped us all. Since we only have five positions to play with, simple digits, colour coded to represent significant milestones like would seem to be the best option:

White numbers for 0–99
Red numbers for 100–999
Cyan numbers for 1000–4999
Green numbers for 5000–9999
Yellow numbers for 10000–?

Worth thinking about, anyway. No interpretation necessary. Works for totals up to 999,999!

Looks good to me. It allows totals up to 999999!:shock: It gets my vote. However, it's 96 pixels wide, and the limit is 95!

That was because we were trying to keep the column width manageable and it corresponded with the 95 pixel avatar width. (I notice some people now have avatars 100px wide)

Guys, the only reason I go caching is get another star!!! The proposal for text sucks - sorry.

I also think that introducing too many colours and combinations will be confusing. I am no good at quickly decoding puzzles.

I do agree with a sliding scale for indicating find milestones with them reducing the higher you go.

Is it possible to just have one other simple special indicator to show that the current convention is being repeated above the current maximum capacity eg a gold bar across the bottom of the stars.

KISS - keep it simple stupid - is my motto

Another idea.

How about we stop the stars after the current capacity and hand out titles?

"legend"
"addicted"
"top cat"
"i don't have time to work" :D :D :D :D :D :D

Sounds good. So, the simplest system would be to go with Pesky's digits suggestion. No puzzles to work out. Simple, easy-to-read numbers, colour-coded to indicate the relative size of the number, but without the need to know what the colours represent.

Comments?

Cheers,

dak

Digits sounds good for those cachers who exceed the current capacity for stars

I vote for digits.

edited to add (now that I've got the computer back from my daughter): I reckon Pesky's digital display would be great, if it's possible. It would be encouraging to see regular, small increases in our numbers.

Either way, I like the idea of finds being displayed in some sort of numerical format; much cleaner than trying to interpret stars.

Okay, another idea...Display number of finds and ranking. Ranking could be of people who've logged a find in Aust, or of GCA members. I'm sure this could be derived from C@W stats!

Ranking implies this whole activity is a competition - which I refuse to accept :x
