Gidday Guys,
new caches don't have the closing ">" , creating damaged hyperlinks.

oops, sorry, it was a quick cut and paste job. we've put the > back in.
we originally put the <> around the links because we heard it stopped some email clients splitting long urls across multiple lines. it's interesting to hear that if a client sees a <, it wants a >, even for a text email!

we didn't get a NSW cache update today and were wondering why. it turns out there were no new caches. so we have modified the updates to send out a notification that there are no new caches today. we thought that it would be better to have positive confirmation that there was nothing new rather than wondering whether the thing was working. your thoughts?

from tomorrow, the daily cache updates should include cache changes. here's an example:

Code: Select all

Changed caches:

 A burried river by stumpyspud (Creswick)

   Map:  http://geocaching.com.au/map/?gc=GCK99B
   Changes:
     - Short Description changed
     - Long Description changed

 Down by the Riverside by Chookies (Elwood)
   Page: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GCJWQV
   Map:  http://geocaching.com.au/map/?gc=GCJWQV
   Changes:
     - Type: Traditional Cache -> Multi-Cache

 Shelob's Lair (LR10) by Nutcache (Millgrove)
   Page: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GCJJWA
   Map:  http://geocaching.com.au/map/?gc=GCJJWA
   Changes:
     - Lat: S 37° 46.648 -> S 37° 46.647
     - Lon: E 145° 39.696 -> E 145° 39.692

 Winches & Waterfalls 4WD Event Cache. by embi (Slaty Creek)

   Map:  http://geocaching.com.au/map/?gc=GCHQ73
   Changes:
     - Long Description changed
let us know if there are any problems.

next step for cache updates is html, but that will probably be a while.

there were some errors in the cache updates today
they look like the this:
Changed caches:

#22 !! A E I O U !! by SNIFTER (Springwood)
Page: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_de ... ?wp=GC1ED6
Map: http://geocaching.com.au/map/?gc=GC1ED6
Changes:
- Owner: The 2 Dogs -> SNIFTER
- State: NSW ->
- Short Description changed
- Long Description changed
- Short Description changed
- Long Description changed
the errors came about because yesterday we imported a gpx file from a user and the import didn't go quite right - it blanked out the states of all and subtly altered the cache description (added a newline or something) for all caches they'd found.

we saw this yesterday and did a quick fix to correct the states so caches didn't drop off the state lists. we didn't bother correcting the descriptions else because we knew it would correct itself automatically this morning.

so some of the cache updates will exhibit the behaviour above:
- a state that looks as if we has changed to nothing, but we'd changed it back manually
- some other fields (primarily short and long description) changed twice. (this is them getting set to one thing, then reset back)

in future, if you see that a particular field has changed twice, it's probably because we were getting differing information from our multiple redundant feeds. nothing to worry about, but a sign that says we'd received two different versions of data over the last 24 hours.

sorry for the confusion

Hi i!

I don't seem to get daily updates and have not been getting them for a long while (6 months or more). Something just remined me about it and I went in to my profile to turn it on only to find out it has been on the hole time. Could you please fix it up for me.

Thanks
Dooghan

hi dooghan, that's because the current cache updates are based on usergroups to identify which state people are in. there is no qld usergoup (dunno why!) so the qld update goes to noone.

the good news is that the new owner and watchlist email code we wrote today also does cache updates. we haven't turned that on yet, but we'll let the owner and watchlists run for a couple of days and if they work, we'll turn on the new cache update stuff.
