log import wizard [closed]
I'm still missing quite a few finds
Has the ETA firmed up on when we will be able to upload/update cache logs/finds
Has the ETA firmed up on when we will be able to upload/update cache logs/finds
sorry, not really
it's on the list
we are trying to work through the bugs with the stuff we have implemented before introducing lots of new ones!
it's pretty high up on the functionality list, so we should get there soon(ish!)

we've now got some headspace to think about the log import wizard
our cunning plan (suggested by a certain cacher with a matrix-like socket at the back of his head) is to scrap the "copy and paste" from geocaching.com and get with the times and simply upload a gpx file from gsak
the advantage of this is that:
* it will get all your types of logs and caches (finds, dnf, webcams) in one process (the old import wizard had two or three different URLs to do it)
* it will be more robust - it won't break when groundspeak change their page formas
* it won't have the duplicate problem of the previous log import wizard
* it will give gca the coordinates of the overseas caches so that they get plotted on maps correctly
* it's simpler to manage for everyone concerned!
the disadvantage is that:
* it relies on people having gsak. we think this can be mitigated by simply asking someone who does have gsak to do it for you
what are everyone's thoughts? (please don't say "both" because we are don't want the hassle of writing, supporting and maintaining two systems to do the same thing)

I don't know about others, but I don't have my locationless caches in GSAK; it wouldn't be hard to get them in there, but this may prove a small impediment to some.
I'd prefer the copy&paste method from the gc.com site... it makes it available to all users that way & keeps it relatively simple to users who may not be 'advanced' geocachers (i.e. wouldn't require understanding of gpx files, gsak, etc).

I've just generated a GPX with ALL LOGS of ALL CACHES in tassie (including archived), would this be of any help to ya??ideology wrote:cool, we'll see how other people react
in the meantime, could either of you please
1. post a set of instructions that we would need to include in the wizard
2. email us a couple of sample gpx files of your finds so we can take a look at them and get a feel for what we would need to do?
thanks!
(Too much time on my hands)
The tool I wrote uses a GPX file (sans logs) then gets the log data from *somewhere * and repopulates the GPX file with ALL the logs.. In theory if someone gave me a whole of Australia GPX, I could populate that.... that said.. I'm on dialup.... Glad to help if I can.

This isn't really the right thread, but on Wednesday I did 8 caches. Initially, none of them appeared on GCA. Now, two days later, two have appeared, but the remaining 6 are nowhere in sight. Was there a problem with the updates on Wednesday? Any ideas?
Eventually I would like to update GCA to be correct, but I guess I'll have to wait until this utility is back again.
PS I vote for the GSAK GPX file method.
