The graphs look pretty good C@W. Sufficient to get me interested in how to make them, so I read up on graphs over the last couple of days.<p>

Before the move the database wasn't mysql, there is a good chance it still isn't.</p>

You can set privileges on mysql from the shell if you use the mysql command. The syntax is <a href="http://dev.mysql.com/doc/mysql/en/grant.html">here</a> if you want to play around with it and have shell access to your server.<p>
Remote access is simple. Just replace 'localhost' with the fqn of the server in the connect string.

hi c@w

we are trying to figure out a way of opening up the database in a secure way
the server is constantly getting hammered by port scans, etc trying to break in all the time
opening the database is easy, but even if it is a trusted host, it's still an untrusted network and we need to make sure that we don't get hit by the zillions of attacks constantly buzzing around the net

as riblit says, the cache listings are in postgres, but it's pretty similar at the sql level except for some nested queries and stuff

test environment? umm... you're looking at it! the current geocache listings was the beta site where we were doing development and we were forced by hardware failures to turn it on earlier than expected. we had a different data model at the back end and that is why it is taking a while to get all the new functionality working - the front end didn't match the changed back-end data structures. we will be re-establishing a test environment in the near future.

in the interim we will pm you a present!

regards
i!

Thanks to the small present from Ideology, here is some real data for Ideology, Mind Socket and (of course) myself.

Why only the 3? I've been suffering grief all night trying to load the full compliment of data, so I pulled a subset. I'll try and get some more up tomorrow.

Whaddyathink?

There's probably a small glitch in my SQL statements around the fact that some finds have a status of " " which I'm not sure how to interpret. Webcams for one show up like this.

Apart from that my testing shows it working.

Still got a few things to tidy up.

Coooooooooooool!!!

It would be interesting (amongst the hundreds of other potential stats/graphs) to see whether find frequency is seasonal. The find graph by month but ignoring the year would do that. Then you could plot it against average temperature and rainfall for the region.

PS George, we need to get out more. :p

Yes (ish) for you and Ideology. For me, it's the middle of winter.

Yes in (great) part.

I took a holiday to Queensland this year for my birthday and hit 26 caches in three days up there as well as the usual compliment in Melbourne.

Last year was only my 2nd full month (started in May 2004) so I was keen, bored, time on my hands and there were still heaps of caches around me. I got 80 in that month  Nothing compared to the hundreds that are found nowadays.

So you are correct that you can't draw simple conclusions based on date. You also need to know how many months are in that month :-)

I really need to get the data for maccamob up there. Then we'll see some interesting stuff.

Ta c@w, am wondering how long it will take my employer to work out that your other domain is as evil as the one they've blocked.

Hmmm really shows up my laziness terrain-wise. Must try some Derringer caches :)

caw, we just saw your posting in the victorian forum about not having state information

is there any other types of information you need to produce whiz-bang graphs like this? if so, please let us know. we could produce a regularly updated extract that you have up-to-date information

Hi dudes.

<<REMOVED OLD GRAPH IMAGES>>

A last quick graph (after some slight mods) to the formats. Let's see how this one looks.

One moe thing and I'm finished.

i! if you could provide me one last extract (same as last time with state would be nice) I'll run one more batch of tests, then the code should be ready to hand over.
