Why have a prefix at all??
After all GC, AC AU GA etc are just wasted identifiers - we will all know, or find out pretty quickly, that they are Australian geocaches.
By not using the identifiers you now have a possible 16777215 cache identifiers if you use hex alone (000000 - FFFFFF). How many would you have if you used a base 36 numbering system (000000 - ZZZZZZ)?
My two bobs worth.

Cause people use their GPSr for storing other waypoints as wellian-and-penny wrote:Why have a prefix at all??
This combined with the fact that not everyone has a GPSr that has specific geocaching symbols
I personally like the idea of GAxxxx due to the fact of searching for australian caches is easier in large (PC) waypoint lists (mine is currently at 5000+ ) with other software eg. excel, g7toWin etc. This is important when there may be no waypoint symbols......
