GGZ file and retiremenent of old GPX schemas

Post by Geocaching Australia » 29 November 19 7:41 am

We will shortly be supporting and providing a GGZ file format download for any of your MyQuery that you own.

GGZ files are used by certain Garmin GPS devices to maximise the number of geocaches that you can hold and usefully display. We hope that the new GGZ file generator will enable you to make better use of the data from Geocaching Australia straight to your device without having to transform via any third party applications.

From the Garmin website:
GGZ is a Garmin file extension utilized for a specially formatted zipped file containing a large quantity of geocaches. The properties of the GGZ file allow it to be read much faster than a standard ZIP containing a large quantity of geocaches. Devices compatible with GGZ files include the eTrex Touch series, GPSMAP 64 series, Oregon 600 series, Monterra, Montana 610 and 680 models. Garmin BaseCamp does not currently support GGZ files. These files cannot be imported into this program.

At the same time we will be removing the ability to generate v1.0 and v1.1 of the GPX file schema and all GPX, GGZ and ZIP downloads will be in the latest 1.0.1 (GC Compatible) format.

If you are currently using a v1.0 or v1.1 of the GPX file schema, we recommend you go to your My Settings (https://geocaching.com.au/my/settings), set your version number to 1.0.1 and confirm that this version will work on your devices.

We are removing v1.0 which was an open source GPX file format which did not receive wide support and is completely unsupported by any GPX device currently being manufactured.

We are removing v1.1 which has also not been widely adopted and was essentially superseded by v1.0.1 nearly a decade ago.

By removing the two unsupported file schemas we reduce our GPX file generation code by approximately 80% which means our development team can continue to focus on value rather than technical debt.

Thanks for your support and patience.

The weekly emailed gpx files no longer have the name of the dowwload in the email. I currently have a number of requests set for the same day and there is no way of knowing which is which.
