Geocaching Australia needs your help

Post by Geocaching Australia » 06 March 18 10:35 am

To all our community members in Australia, New Zealand and worldwide.

We'll get directly to the point; we're asking you to help Geocaching Australia. To maintain a free and open, global geocaching listing site we need money to pay our web hosting bills. We need $1,600 per year to host our web server. If everyone who was a member bought one or two items or donated $5.00 through our shop we could keep Geocaching Australia thriving for this year.

The price of a coffee or two is all we ask to keep the website running.

When we started Geocaching Australia all of our costs were paid for by a benefactor. Over the years we have moved to a model where we are self-funding through sales in our shop. This year has been particularly tough and we do not have enough in the coffers to run beyond June this year. It has crossed our minds as to how much more we could make by running ads but then your experience would be interrupted by inappropriate, noisy, obtrusive ad placements. We don't like that and expect that you don't either.

Most people will ignore this message but we hope that a few will think about the benefits of having an alternative listing site offering games, rewards, statistics and other things and help us to maintain the free and open global geocaching site.

All you need to do it buy a few items or give a donation to help us out at http://geocaching.com.au/shop/

Thank you.

You're brilliant. Love it when people can help us out but they also get some products. Thanks also for your donation.

I used to collect them from my shop. Stopped 2 years ago after only 3 months when I had a bucket full. Imagine how much I could have by now! I could have sold them at the upcoming mega and donated the money to GCA! haha

I tried to make a donation, but it requires me to sign up for the shop. The signup page is *not* secure and thus I don't want to enter my details into it.

Is there another way to make a donation?

None of our forum, site or shop use SSL. Your password will be as secure as it is at the main website. Payments are made via PayPal which is a 3rd party site which uses SSL. There is no other way to make a donation.

People keep on bringing this up, they expect some kind of security when entering personal details.

Even worse, from July 2018 Chrome will mark non-HTTPS sites as "Not secure".

Let's Encrypt provides free SSL certificates and has a zero-administration method to update them.

There is really no reason any more to not provide a secure connection on places where people expect them, specially not when you are in the donations season.
