Wiki Ideas

Post by ziggiau » 28 August 15 1:14 pm

I use the wiki and it is good :D. But there are a few things that I've searched for and got no results for. I'm not up on wiki editing (although I've been an ODP/DMOZ (http://www.dmoz.org/) editor for many many years) so not sure the best way to suggest new pages. These are topics I don't know the answer to and rather than ask newbie questions in the forum I'd much prefer to read up on the topics in the wiki.

I've found http://wiki.geocaching.com.au/wiki/Wiki ... pment_List. Is that the right place to offer suggestions?

Also, I'm not sure how the wiki search does its thing. I searched the wiki for the word types and I get "No page title matches" yet there is a page called Cache Type (http://wiki.geocaching.com.au/wiki/Cache_type). I'm guessing it's an exact matching thing (using type does give the expected result) but while I'm still able to represent the newbie GCA user group (do I qualify for an upgrade once I get my 100 Finds Pathtag? ), I found the result frustrating.

Ooh, I've really jumped in the deep end today and made a wiki edit (about something I do know a little about)! =D>

The wiki search is pretty ordinary. As it's out-of-the-box software we are reticent to change things with it.....
BUT, it's MANY versions old now, I might look at updating it and see it that enhances anything.

ANYONE can have a crack at editing the pages though, your username and password for here should work, However, if you have mixed capitals in your name (Such as CraigRat) then you need to log in with only the FIRST letter capitalised (eg: Craigrat).

If you feel there should be a new page, just add it. If you find old or now out of date information, feel free to edit it!

Don't be afraid to fiddle... Have a look at other pages to see how links and formatting are done and go for it!

The only way to figure out things is to jump in and go for it! I like the enthusiasm!

I did have to quickly learn a bit of syntax but it's pretty easy. Off to do some more fiddling now! Are there any wiki admins who proof or double check changes?

Re: new pages, there are some I'd only like to suggest at this point hoping that people who actually HAVE the information will fill in the blanks. Correct procedure?

We may as well use this thread to discuss the wiki as all the others are quite old now

What pages do you think it needs?

Would there be interest in info about GDAK? It's a (simple) equivalent of GSAK for Android and can work with GSAK databases. No info on how it works "in the field" with GCA caches but I'll find that out in 2 months time \:D/

One of you Aussies will have to check the text though as I'm not a native speaker (but I do have a spellchecker  )

I don't understand what Bingo is all about. I've searched the wiki but can find no mention of it. I've searched on "game" and "games" and no mention. This all started because I saw a moveable pop up nearby and I wanted to see what the rules/objectives of the game were (even if it's historical now) so I didn't do the wrong thing with it. The Moveable Cache page - http://wiki.geocaching.com.au/wiki/Moveable_cache - references a few things but maybe a summary page for all the different games played within the GCA site with links back to moveable, dragonzone, etc.

Would you mind if I played with the formatting of some pages? I've come across a few that are text dense and some simple formatting might make them more readable. Not sure how much tinkering is ok. =8)

Ok, I'll have a play in the wiki when I get a chunk of time.

I love discovering new parts of the GCA website that have been staring me in the face for months but I never needed to use.

When the gegnome2 game was announced, C@W suggested slapping a QR Code on the gnome. In the back of my mind I thought that this would be a painful task to find a way to do this. But today I found that by clicking on the drop down arrow to the right of the map box on a cache page that says QR Code, there was one already generated for me. Noice! \:D/

But when I clicked on the ? for help (to make sure I understood how to use it) the link to http://wiki.geocaching.com.au/wiki/QR_Codes comes back with a blank page. Can this be added to the wiki to do list please? Happy to write it/edit it once I understand it =8)

Oh, and while we're at it, I've just been told about GeoKrety (http://geokrety.org) which is listed as being fully supported by GCA. A wiki page on how this works with GCA caches would be good too (an alternative to swaggies perhaps?).

Basically, the QR code can be printed and attached to a cache, and when scanned it will go straight to the logging page for that cache.
They were all the rage for about 5 minutes, not sure how useful they are now.

I use them on my caches all the time. Very handy on a movable when you can scan and go.

Which is why a page is worth it (and because broken/unpopulated links are a simple fix). Happy to flesh new pages out, but I don't believe I have permission to add new pages to the wiki.
