Slow Site Loading [closed]

Post by Lt. Sniper » 02 December 04 12:42 pm

Is it just me or is this site turning out like the main GC site. :(
I keep getting time outs and pages are really slow to load. :(
Any other site I visit is fine. :(

It's always been a lot slower than GC.com for me.

Could it be somthing to do with ISPs favouring OS sites.

Posting a message usually gets the message sent straight away but when I edit a message as soon as I submit it to be re-posted I have to wait at least 30 seconds before anything happens, its always the same, always the same amount of time for a re-submit/edit.

I just had my first time out then which made me post this topic.

EDIT: I know its not our broadband, Bigpond Cable, its GC.com.au site related.

Some of that is the PhpBB software and the access to the MySQL database. With an edit there is a lot more going on that just a straight post so the time is longer.

I think some of the problem is also that there are quite a lot more users both on the boards and in the stats sections than there have been in the past.

As each person visits the stats pages, the content is generated in realtime which is presumable putting additional load on the server. Ideology have mentioned caching (ha!) the stats pages, so when they return from NT the performance might pick up again.

It has been consistantly slower all along for me. Could it be somthing to do with the graphics & avators etc?

But I'm not complaining as we can't argue with the charges and the countles hours of work that have been volenterily (I asume) put into the site. :) (Thanks)

The avatars can cause the page to load slowly. All it takes is one person with an oversize (byte-wise) image on a slow server, and the whole page can get delayed.

If someone lets me know a sample URL that is consistently slow for them, I'll try profiling load times on it (could be tricky with all the *ahem* caching that goes on).

It happens nearly every time I have to edit a page and sometimes when I click on the GCAU logo on the top to take me back to the main page.

Maybe the admin could make avatar display an option to help people with slower connections - is that doable on a wide scale? I haven't seen an avatar since the board started and it's great, pages load a lot quicker. Of course on the down side I miss out on all those wonderfully created graphics, but I'm dealing with it.
