Cache location information [closed]

Post by Horus » 31 October 04 11:17 pm

Just wondering where the site gets it's information regarding a caches "location/suburb"? I ask because my new cache "Lookout Matthew!" is listed as being in Windamere, where it is in fact in Rosevears. Not a huge problem normally, it would only upset anally retentive types, but in this situation it means a drive of about 40 kilometres if a visiting cacher were to take the location as a guide - it's a long way around the river. Likewise with "It's All Down Hill from Here", it has also been placed on the opposite side of the river in Inveresk, it is actually in Trevallyn - not such a big deal, but erroneous all the same.

hi horus

Cache locations are generated by looking for the nearest postcode area. This works in most cases but there are occasional errors due to the following:

Postcode areas are odd shapes. We don't have the exact boundary of each postcode area - only a single central coordinate. So, if a cache is inside a large postcode area adajcent to a small postcode area, the algorithm will look to see which is the closest postcode and choose the smaller area.
Some of the postcode coordinates we have are dodgy. We've seen Suburb West east of Suburb, other suburbs kilometres out, etc. You can tell if this is the case by looking at the Geocaching Australia Map, where postcode areas are listed in light brown italics.

At the moment, cache locations are automatically generated. In future, we plan to allow cache owners to update their caches' locations as required. We also plan to allow editing the base postcode information, but this is a way off.

we now have cache editing, so locations can be updated by cache owners!
