Long gone mods on this site

Post by Yurt » 30 June 11 7:49 pm

This is something that has long intrigued me. I know from the logs that ideology were pioneers in this game but have long since retired from it and don't visit apparently. However they are listed as a moderator for this forum.

Also embi, who has also cashed in their geocaching chips, is listed as a moderator for the GC forum area.
There are a few others listed that rarely turn up too. I won't name them but if you click their profiles you can see the last time they dropped by.

As this site seems to run pretty well with just the benevolent guiding hands of caughtatwork and CraigRat there probably isn't any major need for additional mods, however I was just wondering why all those names still appear as most of them are just about never here.

Not volunteering, by the way!

My concern with the absence of some of the moderators is that C@W has taken on the job of moderating many of the forums. He seems happy to do this, but given the developer workload he also shoulders, it doesnt really seem fair. I wouldnt mind if we were able to recruit some new, more frewquent site users to be mods. (not casting aspersions at C@W - just think we can make better use of his time).

embi is the original owner of the GCA forums.
i! was instrumental in setting the site up as it is now.
riblit is a previous developer.

You'll notice that their names are in red(ish) and bold which means they are founding members of the GCA website (well, forums actually).

I will remove them as being specific moderators for this forum, but they will remain as founding members and global moderators for the website as tribute to their origins.

I did bring this topic up quite a while ago as i noticed people who were listed as moderators for various forums were no longer active in the game. Some changes were made then.

It's up to C@W if he is happy to keep moderating when required, I guess a backup would be useful if he ever takes some time off and goes away 8) In which case maybe the Senators could take on the role for their states, or if they don't want to nominate someone else to do it if they are willing.

Every current mod has been on the forum in the last month, I checked last night.
So while the mods may not mod as much as I may, they are there.
There is a minimal need to mod this forum, with the occassional outbreak requiring a little encouragement back on track.

The mods have been culled again.
We're now down to a small handful of mods and admins who try to ensure that your forum is kept clear of spam, doofuses and solicitations. We also try to keep the flame wars to a minimum, but luckily we haven't had much on that front recently.

The original Forum was actually set up by Pyrenees Kid. When his hosting arrangements fell through, i! stepped up and offered to host it. PK remained involved for a while after that. Cache listings followed on later. embi was the first Australian reviewer.

A Vote of Thanks

It was interesting to hear more about the founders and early moderators of the GCA Forum.

A vote of thanks to them and the current incumbents. Very much appreciated.

I can't find it right now, but ideology did a good post on the history of the site in a thread where they officially handed c@w and myself the keys. it's one of their last posts.
