new zealand additions [closed]

Post by ideology » 12 October 04 9:50 am

at the request of a certain large hairy left-handed creature hibernating in a cave in NZ, we have added NZ cache info.

the main change is two additional tabs in the header. these lead to north and south island pages should work just like the other state pages, eg RSS feeds, searches, recommendations, etc.

due to our laziness, the old "australia" page is now a combined leaderboard for both countries, so we renamed it to complete leaderboard or something. we can split this up into the two countries if there is demand.

we don't have any decent maps for NZ. if you know of some nice links we can put up on NZ cache pages, please let us know.

nz location names are from a dodgy datafile that fell off the back of a cave. nz caches are typically named with the province in brackets.

given the extra caches, we might need to add the ability to search caches within a particular state or island.

let us know how it goes

"left-handed"? Hmmm... sounds sinister....

There's two easy online mapping solutions. One of them you've already implemented (geez, are these guys good or what?), since MultiMap now works in NZ. The other is http://wherearewe.co.nz and the link I use in GSAK is:
"Where Are We (NZ)=http://www.wherearewe.co.nz/newzealand. ... ment=%code"

I imagine you clever chaps can convert that to some useful cgi or php or ran dom tla.

For Kiwis reading this: the locations are a little over-specific, but you you probably know the local names, even if the more distant placenames are obscure. This can, and might, be fixed a bit sometime.

we've made a NZ rss feed. it is available at http://geocaching.com.au/rss/nz.rss

there are also rss feeds for individual islands at http://geocaching.com.au/rss/ni.rss and http://geocaching.com.au/rss/si.rss

remember, please don't poll this more than once an hour
thanks

Maybe you can make the Aussie tabs green and gold and the sheep rooter's tabs black and white

Yay!
I visit geocaching.com.au a lot to keep track of my efforts and those of others nearby, but as someone who regularly crosses the ditch to cache on both sides (usually ACT/NSW/Canterbury), it's great that I can now have all my info in one place. Cheers.
