Split it into states and let us toggle between the last week, month or year.

Looks good - but the cachers at the top of the list must have time on their hands. <P> The idea of toggling between states, years, months, weeks and days will make it more user friendly.... I suppose its too much to ask which caches visited.

thanks. yes, the feedback we got on the new homepage was that people wanted to see state-based stuff in tabs, so we've developed the following


but having done that, we've realised that there's a lot of duplication of cache names and stuff. we are trying to work out how to summarise it better. one way might be to show active caches and active cachers. the left hand side might look like this:

Active Caches

Basic Brown
- Hidden by George
Dooooo
- Hidden by George; Found by Snifter, Team Loon
Poor Whatever
- Found by Grumbles
West Coast Explorer
- Found by Boggle Bear, Wabbito

and the right hand side:

Active Cachers

Boggle Bear
- Found West Coast Explorer, Isle of the Dead, Electric Fish, This, That, The Other
Wabbito
- Found West Coast Explorer

etc. so you could look at the left hand side and see caches which have just been hidden or found, and look at the right hand side and see who is doing what. just looking at the amount of text, you could see the level of activity, and if the whole lot would be links so you could click off to see the details.

we can't go back in time too far because we don't have a lot of historical log data. we're not sure how to get this data at the moment. the easiest way might be to import people's gsak data, but there's no compelling reason for a majority of people to do that (at this stage) so for the time being we can only go back a few months

we've split it up by states and mocked up hyperlinks to the caches

it's a fascinating view of geocaching activity which we think is worth sharing:
here's a live version to play with (try clicking on the different states)
there are some really keen cachers around!

for the moment, we've set it to 30 days, but that will be configurable
yes, we realise its a complex display. we will probably do a simpler display as on the statistics screen, then some kind of click-through to more detail like this
we are still working on the non-state tabs (eg home, cachers, tools, links)
we know it's a bit slow - we think most of the delay is sending the data, but we'll have a look at the timings in a while - this is beta stuff after all

the sorting algorithm is as follows: active caches are sorted with newly hidden caches first, then sorted according to how many finds they have had. if we sorted by finds, we just kept getting virtuals coming up (boring...) cachers are sorted by total number of hidden + finds. we tried sorting by hidden, then finds, but the top of the list was filled with one-off entries of cachers who had hidden one cache. we figured that their cache was at the top of the active caches list, so that would be good enough. it's nice to see the red-hot cachers at the top with big blocks of found caches!

we are pretty happy with the active cachers list on the right, but the active caches seems too complex. perhaps we should split out new caches from found caches, or order it in number of finds, but then highlight new caches in a different colour. your thoughts?

Is it possible to include the number of finds/logs bracketed after the cache name? Eg. "Perisher Blue (4)"?

Looks great. I'm even on the list despite a couple of quiet weekends (running out of local ones to do).

I get a geocaching Australia logo and page not found message. Happens on the 3 caches I have tried so far.

This will be another challenge to hit the top of the monthly list for some!

ok, we've added the find count next to the finds underneath each cache. it follows a similar format to the right hand side

Bloody locationless caches pop up though....500 americans log a locationless cache in AU and pop up on our stats because they sat at home.

Can locationless ones be removed??

WooHoo! We're on the NSW list (top 30 at that!) for another few days!

There are some truly scary 'found' numbers on these lists...

done. we've filtered out locationless, virtual and webcam caches
(some of you know our views on locationless caches)
we'll put in a checkbox to allow people to view them if they wish

I like the idea of the state tabs.
