Re: Report GCA Site issues here
The server is under normal load at the moment. Until we get the new machine into service, I'm afraid we'll need to suffer the consequences.
In the meantime I've removed the "caches near" function. That will speed things up until hardware addresses the issue. I'm not sure it's used much anymore anyway.

Pre-compile the list of caches nearby, don't do it at run-time.caughtatwork wrote:The server is under normal load at the moment. Until we get the new machine into service, I'm afraid we'll need to suffer the consequences.

Re: Report GCA Site issues here
That won't work, sorry. Too many variable to pre-cache.
Re: Report GCA Site issues here
The number of caches doesn't change that much. For a new location you will only need to recalculate the closest ten ones. Then you recalculate for these ten. Done.caughtatwork wrote:That won't work, sorry. Too many variable to pre-cache.

Re: Report GCA Site issues here
One of the variables is that the list only shows geocaches which have not been found by you. We're simply not going to calculate your unfound caches filter by the 10 closest to each cache * the number of geocaches on the site.
10,000 geocaches * 4,000 geocachers * 10 closest unfound = 400,000,000 rows.
I understand what your proposal is, but as the data is more complex than just a "list of the closest 10", your suggestion can't be accommodated.
It's a lot more complex than calculating details and data for a single user situation like an app on a personal device. We have a lot of users and data that we would need to prepare data for and on our infrastructure it's not feasible.

Aha, that was not clear that that was the case.caughtatwork wrote:One of the variables is that the list only shows geocaches which have not been found by you.

When I go to the WA dashboard it says there's no caches awaiting a FTF, yet I know there are several in WA that are yet to be found/logged ... GA7789 for example.

It timed out when running. These probably need to be disabled until the new machine is in service.

Trying to add all my gnomes to the GA website but it's crawling along. Taking over a minute just to update an edit to the page

Sorry, that could have been about the time I was uploading all the updated ACT/NSW logs for the last week (which did seem to be taking a little longer than usual). My gnome creating earlier on seemed to be running OK.spatialriq wrote:Trying to add all my gnomes to the GA website but it's crawling along. Taking over a minute just to update an edit to the page

Re: Report GCA Site issues here
I must apologise to the community, I have been intolerably slow with the new server.
Without going in to gory details, work and family and putting or house on the market (and al that involves) have consumed a huge chunk of this year, and finding time has been a challenge.
I'm working on it as we speak, and it's almost all there, but the issue of installing and depolying it in the data center is one I haven't got concrete plans for yet.

Why should you apologize. You volunteer for this organization. Having done a little forum and server administration I am in awe of all the work that you and Caughtatwork do for this website. We are very lucky to have you.CraigRat wrote:I must apologise to the community, I have been intolerably slow with the new server.

Not sure if you want to have this been done: dev.geocaching.com.au is indexed by Google.

Re: Report GCA Site issues here
It just redirects to the main site.
It used to be our testing site, but now we are much braver.

Re: Report GCA Site issues here
Just some tidying up on the log in page.
You'll get:
Access to the forums
Log and list caches
Log and list swaggies
Recommend and rate caches
... and much much more!
The text mentions swaggies which are no longer available. So best delete the text.
