GCA Incorrectly records GC caches as archived
GCA Incorrectly records GC caches as archived
I have noticed recently that the Daily GCA Cache Update email that I get sometimes has a long list under "Archived Caches" and "Unavailable Caches" - only to find they are still active on GC and there is no evidence that anything has changed.
For example today GC1VPWE is marked as archived and unavailble on GCA but it is still there on GC. Is there something wrong with the feed from GC that makes GCA think the cache has disappeared?

Yes
We get a feed for most states once or twice a week.
If we don't get a cache in the feed for 10 days or more (as we can't get archived logs on archived caches), we assume that the cache has been archived.
However, if we don't get a feed because we've broken something, the same thing happens. i.e. 10 days -> Archived.
It's less than optimum, but works (in general) well enough for the purposes for which it is used.
I would be nice to get a daily feed for each state, but that is not an easily accommodated solution .

Re: GCA Incorrectly records GC caches as archived
And I suppose this is why logs on overseas caches always show the cache as archived.
I always thought someone was doing some housekeeping to avoid maintaining the data on the OS cache, but it would appear to be an automated "feature" because GCA doesn't look for regular feeds on OS caches.
Not a problem, just interesting.

Correct, we do not do automatic updates for o/s caches.Dik: wrote: but it would appear to be an automated "feature" because GCA doesn't look for regular feeds on OS caches.

As for Australian caches, we've been rejigging our feeds to cope with then sheer amount of caches there are.

Yeah, it's very annoying having so many caches! I just don't seem to have time to find enough to reduce my "not yet found" list before more new ones are published and the "not yet found" number actually increases
Thanks very much for the explanation and I really appreciate all the hard work you put in to make my new hobby so much fun

So does that mean my Walkies ( Walking the Dog- resurrected) cache can be unarchived? It is not archived but shows up as an archived cache here on GCA or does the next log on it remove it from the archived list?

Re: GCA Incorrectly records GC caches as archived
There is no need to panic if a cache gets archived on GCA, it will normally get fixed as mentioned within a week once the feed is fed.
Please feel free to report a cache if it remains archived for more than a week.
