forum rss feed - beta testing [closed]

Post by ideology » 19 July 04 6:14 pm

are your tired of constantly scanning the forums for the latest geo-gossip?
is your finger sore from clicking the refresh button?

geocaching australia is proud to present an experimental rss feed of the forum
the rss feed gives you the latest posts on geocaching australia
it tells you that that person X has posted to topic Y and gives you a link to the forum
for privacy considerations, the feed does not include the text of the posting: you need to log in to see that

the url of the feed is http://geocaching.com.au/rss/forum.rss

let us know what you think, particularly around the privacy implications.

as with the other feeds, please keep the frequency to hourly or slower

Looks good. I take it anyone can view the feed, but only logged in members can access the user profiles?

If the forum posts could be sanitised to mask email addresses in the text, it might be ok to include the forum content. Could this be the subject of the first gc.com.au referendum?

Some heuristic information like signal/noise ratio would be handy. (although the likely data mining predictors are revealed already) ;)

mind socket, yes, only logged-in members can access user profiles. some readers have the ability to log in to a feed, so we plan to experiment with this in order to offer the content online. come to think of it, we could use the same code base to do a regular digest email to people like ecodave

How do we configure Outlook to be able to read this?

All Cached Up, do you mean outlook or outlook express (chuck them both in the bin if you can ;) )? There is an application called NewsGator that integrates with Outlook for news feeds, but it ain't free.

I am using Awasu to read this thread and post to it. works very well.

But Rog if I throw out my outlook, what would I use instead?

Am using Mozilla Thunderbird and Firefox at home (www.mozilla.org) but cannot change from outlook at work, which is where I'd like to get the feed.

Oh well, suppose I can't do much then - the usual can't install stuff rules apply.

I can't recommend a particular replacement for Outlook, especially if you are in a corporate environment with M$ SOE (this is the case for me). For Outlook Express, I'd highly recommend Thunderbird as a replacement.

So this new feed works well but now I find I am updating more often, which I thought was a no no.

I am also using Awasu to read and post, it must pick up my cookie in IE as i click on a feed item and it opens with me already logged in (i set the auto login cookie on the forum index page)

I also use Newsplorer to give me a ticker across the top of my screen, when something comes up that interests me, i use Awasu to follow the link.

So far all I can say is EXCELLENT and thanks

Chris

This new RSS feed is working really well for me. I'm finding it is saving quite a bit of time. I've got Awasu working with mozilla. Thanks Ideols.
