Re: Moving map on PC using Garmin EtrexC

Hi. For outback Western Australia, Shonkymaps is one of the better vector maps (apart from Garmin Topo and OzTopo).

OziExplorer mapping software (plus maps) for the laptop may be better than Basecamp for outback, but it's a whole new learning curve.
Cheers.

Re: Moving map on PC using Garmin EtrexC

Compatible maps installed to PC (for Basecamp), Pocket Queries for bulk geocache downloads, and GSAK for management of cache files, might be a good start. If you asked ten different people, you might get ten different answers. :) Is his question primarily about the software, hardware, or about geoca...

Re: Newbie thread: Which Garmin handheld GPS to buy?

Hi mraussieadventurer. With appropriate maps, I use a 62S for pretty much everything GPS including geocaching, bushwalking, mapping, street-by-street navigating, boating/fishing, etc. Most modern handheld GPS units with similar specs do a similar job, so if you like the features of the GPSmap 62S (w...

Re: managing tracks generated by Garmin Dakota

The best one for this task is Garmin Mapsource. It isn't supported (IE: maintained/developed) by Garmin now but a Google search should get you a copy. 6.16.2 I think is the most recent version. Garmin Basecamp was a culture shock after Mapsource, is also good, current, and free, from the Garmin webs...

Cheers.

Re: Iphone Geocaching vs Hand Held GPS

Maybe give one a test drive and compare it side by side with your phone, if possible.

Dedicated GPS units like the Etrex are better at doing GPS stuff IMO (including geocaching), however they don't have the finery of a smart phone.

Re: Android Geocaching Apps

Not strictly a geocaching app but I installed the "Bluetooth GPS" app from appbrain, to my Motorola Flipout phone. The app's apparently good for most but not all Android phones. It grabs NMEA strings from my paired bluetooth GPS receiver and means excellent GPS reception even with substandard phone ...

Re: Garmin Montana

Use google maps instead of birdseye Is there a parser which can create kmz-files? Same thing for nearmap would be even better :-" A bit OT but OkCustomMap, or the full OkMap mapping software, from OkMap.org can 'chop' georeferenced raster maps into Garmin CustomMap sized pieces, and older versions ...

Re: Visiting Brisbane Dec2011/Jan 2012

Hi. Many other good locations aren't on this list. Caches will vary but here are some of my sightseeing favourites: 1. The Mt. Coot-tha botanic gardens, Mt. Coot-tha lookout, Sir Samuel Griffith Drive, and picnic areas and walks. 2. (south) Gold Coast hinterland (Currumbin or Tallebudgera or Numinba...

Re: In Car Navigators - Which is best?

The Swaggies, Much too often on another website, someone posts that their new Chinese no-name GPSr doesn't work. I'm not saying that anything illegal is happening here, but it's a slippery slope. I'd recommend a well supported brand GPSr, and well supported (free or commercial) map product. Cheers.

Re: In Car Navigators - Which is best?

Hi. The 1490T is a North America model I think but should be OK with Garmin Topo Aus&NZ if there's enough memory (if the specs are any guide)? The 1450T may not accept added maps though. Maybe ask for confirmation before purchase. :( :)

Re: In Car Navigators - Which is best?

Hi. Personal choice would be the Garmin nuvi 1450T. Should have no problem adding Garmin format Topo maps (like Shonkymaps, Garmin Topo, etc.).

This one has a screen protector thrown in.

Not disagreeing, but they must be doing something right. :?:
