Re: Mapmaker officially launched
Accurate is good, but working offline is also important.

Re: Your hiding style
I think most people put out the sorts of caches they would like to find themselves. So there will be common trends. I personally have put out 2 different 'themed' series - a collection of puzzle caches based on vintage computers ("Joy Of Hex"), and a series ("Nontrivial") of multis that require hard...

Here's a log describing (with minimal detail) just such an event - http://www.geocaching.com/seek/log.aspx ... a4db4936f3

Re: Iphone cachers
Smartphones can use "assisted gps" meaning they use the data network to access some or all of: - current time - current location of satellites - accurate location of some nearby wifi or 3G network All of which speeds up the time taken to get an accurate fix. added: http://www.macworld.com/article/11...

Re: Iphone cachers
I have an android smartphone, a vista HCx gps, and an iPad, and I find the GPS accuracy in the iPad to be at least as good as the vista, but the ability to pull up, scroll and zoom easily through topo, openstreetmaps and satellite images to be completely addictive. Around town no one really looks tw...

Re: DNF ratio
41 DNFs (including 9 on bifrost) vs 255 finds. I also have a few where I have given up without getting closer than 50m of GZ, in which case I post a note not a DNF. I must admit I haven't posted a DNF after every unsuccessful search, I always do on the first failed attempt but sometimes will skip lo...

Re: Minimalist Cache Logs -- Opinions Wanted
I'm not sure appealing to the umpire is going to lead to much happiness. I am sure you can get the logs reinstated but will that really bring back the warm fuzzy feeling? My suggestion would actually be to look for a cache that is literally (to quote pjmpjm) "5km off a fire trail in the Jamison " Sp...

Re: Trying to find my first ever cache - inner Melbourne in 2005
I have no idea which cache you are refering to as the "other" but I don't see any firm evidence that would absolutely preclude Maggies-lens's first cache being published in early 2006. As reasoned above, the EXIF data is bogus, and the absolute earliest the pic could have been taken is July 2005, pr...

Re: Trying to find my first ever cache - inner Melbourne in 2005
I found a copy of the camera manual at http://www.scribd.com/doc/973136/FinePix-Camera-S5200-S5600-owner-manual-PDF and page 14 confirms the date & time needs to be set one first power up after purchase or "when the batteries have been removed and the camera has been left for a long period". The scr...

Re: Trying to find my first ever cache - inner Melbourne in 2005
Except - the timestamp (03:50:13 ) is inconsistent with the fact the photo is cleary taken in the daylight. And a quick google for the camera model brought up this page http://www.trustedreviews.com/Fujifilm-FinePix-S5600_Digital-Camera_review which claims that model was only released in July of 200...

Re: scraping 'found it' logs
It looks like GSAK is windows only. What I want is something I can set up as a cron job running on a linux server.crew 153 wrote:If you are only looking at 300 odd caches would it be better using GSAK to store the data.

Re: scraping 'found it' logs
I tried to download just now and my caches.csv and cachers.csv are both 0 bytes, and logs.csv is 400 bytes ( using wget on Linux) - are the files on the server correct? I also checked in safari on my iPad and they all look empty but that cold just be safari no rendering csv files.

scraping 'found it' logs
I would like to generate (and publish online) some stats based on 'found it logs' on caches. I don't want to go into the specifics yet (since my idea is still evolving and I am not sure how long before I have something worth talking about) but I know that I will want to collect on a weekly (or maybe...

Re: Top Caches in the world
It would be interesting to know what has the highest number of finders and still has a 100% rating - I know of one that had 4 finders and 4 favorites.
