The obvious best thing to do is change your password. The second thing is get a gmail account and turn on 2 stage verification, it's (ALMOST) impossible for someone to access it by password alone. I think it's more likely to be an evil script running on your PC and accessing your contact list. Did the virus checker come up with anything, and is it a current virus checker? This is a nightmare as many of the cheap/free virus checkers often flag things of little consequence to encourage you buy...

Also, it's pretty trivial to make an email look like it's come from one address even though it was sent from another server entirely. Your account might be fine, but some spambot has randomly chosen to pretend to be you. These things tend to go away fairly quickly, once the storm of failed message ...
