Re: Is my Garmin eTrex-H really waterproof?
My etrex I took my etrex out to Ozone - about a 50 m swim, and survived on the day, so I thought nothing of it. The unit didn't start a week later, so when I opened the battery compartment, it was full of rust. The connection through the case had gone. Fixed with a wire and some solder, but it is de...

Re: How much distance is covered in the decimal degree?
If you treat the earth as a sphere, lat. is always the same distance - i.e 111km. The distance of 1 degree of longitude is 111 times the cosine of the longitude - i.e. 111 at the equator, 0 at the poles where the lines meet.
The nautical mile is defined this way - 1 degree is 60 nm at the equator.

Spice it up a little
I recently saw on ABC a short article on "Chess Boxing" where the competition involves a 4 minute chess session followed by a 3 minute boxing round. Goes until checkmate or TKO. It must have sat in the back of my mind when I was reading the Manly hobbies thread, and saw that paintballing was in ther...

Re: You know you're a Geocacher when............................
You have a parchment on your desk covered by symbols that you pore over during your lunch hour. Your work colleagues think you are truely dilligent learning some new programming language in your break, although they cannot understand the level of swearing that this exercise generates. Feeling sorry ...

Re: 'Theft' of trackables - it's getting ridiculous.
I (D) was pretty much over coins and bugs from the start. Too much hassle for something that's likely to go mising straight away. Path tags re my preference - the may or may not be logged, and there's no big deal if someone holds on to them.

That's actually a game we play... You get points for pointing out a place on the news or in a show where you know there's a cache.

Re: The end of stand-alone GPSr's?
Our Garmins are certainly bigger and heavier than the iPhone or n95, but have you seen me go after a cache? Usually crawling under, climbing over etc etc, and there's no way the iPhone or n95 would last 5 minutes! Anyone taken their iPhone out to Ozone?
