Re: Garmin GPSmap 78

I quite like my 78s. It is the marine version of the 62s. Great to have all geocaching info in the one tool. I regularly load 3,300+ caches, 800+ waypoints and 13,000+ Custom POI weekly. Neat to have each map loaded as a separate image file - makes for quick processing and loading of map updates. It...

Re: Garmin 60CSX waypoint memory full?

Yurt, As a geocacher I get PQ's each week from geocaching.com containing only unfound caches. These I load into GSAK and then use GSAK to filter to select all unfounds, say, within a certain distance from my home. If the number of geocaches + child waypoints in this filter add up to more than, say, ...

Re: Garmin 60CSX waypoint memory full?

Yurt, Your 60csx doesn't save waypoints to the SD card. Waypoints (including geocaches) are saved in internal memory. You are limited to storing 1000 waypoints in internal memory. If you don't need to keep old geocaches or old waypoints in the gps then I suggest that you periodically clear them all ...

Re: Tell happy/funny stories here!

My log for the Nina River cache (GCF6CB): 2pm. After heading south down from the top of the Lewis Pass I overshot the track to the footbridge and stopped further down the road abeam the cache. The distance to the cache was 240m, so not being sure which side of the river it was (but fearing it was go...

Re: Whos got a caching pen ?

My pen (of last resort) after I have lost the 2 pencils that I normally carry - either misplaced or have exited my pockets without permission - is the one hidden within my 3-in1 Palm PDA stylus. This fine tipped biro has saved the day for me on many occasions.

Re: Cache maintennance etiquette

I generally do as richary does. Leave urban caches as is and just place a needs maintenance notice. Rural or outback I will usually dry out, repair, replace baggies, logbooks etc particularly when I know that the owner does not live in the immediate area, but I will remove sodden, manky, mouldy, unr...

Re: Garmin compass calibration

I recently purchased a 60CSX & have not had to recalibrate it at all. Which is just as well as there are NO roundabouts where I live. Your 60CSX will never ask you to recalibrate the compass. It will just silently point you in the wrong direction, if you don't recalibrate it after changing the batt...

Been trying to find this plugin. It seems to have disappeared. Anybody know what happened to it, or where it can be obtained?

Re: TB Tag with no bug and other peculiar things...

Seeing that the owner hasn't replied then I'd read the web page looking for a picture or a description of any object that was originally attached. If so, find something similar and attach it and then send the TB on it's way. If not, then I'd attach something suitable, post a photo of it and log it s...

I believe that although the 121.5Mhz beacons are not recognised by satellite, but passing aircraft will still be able to pick up a signal. Over flying aircraft are definitely not something to rely on for 121.5 detection. As an air traffic controller who has been involved with aircraft searches for ...

I do most of my caching solo. There have been enough trampers slipping and twisting ankles, breaking legs and worse in the NZ backcountry that the decision to carry a Personal Locator Beacon when caching far from the urban jungle was really a no-brainer. $700 gets you a 406Mhz beacon, with a 16 Chan...

There are plenty of free sources of small pieces of metal. I've used guttering/roofing offcuts from housing estates, aluminium offcuts from manufacturers. Just visit and ask. I've found that the usual reply is, "Sure, help yourself out of that bin over there".

All the smelly putrid mouldy and slimy old logbooks I hold at arms length until I can put them in a ziplog bag and then I bin them when I get home. <br> As for the others they tend to initially get lost in the garage with all the broken down electric appliances, holey gumboots, old clothes, cy...
