Thanks for the responses. My efforts at plotting caches on the maps suggested they were very close. As for google, I tried there first and found many excellent sites with very in depth discussions into various ellipsoids and how they differed but nowhere could I find something as simple as 45cm to t...

Difference between datums
A quick question for those who know. I've picked up a couple of new 1:25000 QLD maps recently. They use the GDA94 datum. Geochaching Aus and Geochaching.com both use WGS84 as does my Gps. From a couple of quick conversions there does not appear to be much difference between these datums. My question...

I believe the Windows software you require is img2gps. A google search will reveal download locations. The software is free. For Linux use QLandKarte. Although limited to 8meg, this still allows me to load all of South east Qld, from north of Bundy , west to Chinchilla and south to and over the bord...

An etrex Legend is what I ended up buying as well. The mapping capability is somewhat limited by memory and screen size but it is a great benefit in finding "unknown" geocaches nearby when hunting down a target cache. Download shonky's excellent mapset and your ready to go. As far as the units capab...

In addition to the above, check carefully what comes with the GPS. The Legend comes with the pc cable whereas some of the cheaper units do not. The cable costs $30 odd. The cable makes adding waypoints sooo much easier. Shop around for prices, especially online as prices vary enormously. I have a Le...

I note that the Garmin eTrex Legend (which would seem to aferage about $260 - not the colour screen version) has 8megs of internal memory for maps etc - is this enough for your average map sizes etc? is this expandable with a slot? Forget the 8mg version of the legend. Better to get the legend CX m...

G'Day everybody, new here so be gentle. I'm only new to geocaching, 6 found, using an Etrex Legend. One of my first problems was I use Ubuntu and there is very little software available to communicate between linux and garmin gps's to manage maps and waypoints. I instaled win xp in Virtual box and b...
