Geocaching and private property

This is probably the first of several queries as to the etiquette of caching. I'm a bit unsure as to the exact approach to private property. In Australia, pretty much everything is owned or controlled by someone. Even your local reserves are council land and I'm quite sure a ranger could move you on...

Re: Dakota 20 paperless problem

I think your advice on how to fix the problem is probably sound. My current theory is that, for a period of time, when it downloaded the cache, it either mangled or omitted the actual location. That resulted in locationless files, so of course they didn't appear because it didn't know where they wer...

Dakota 20 paperless problem

This is a continuation of a query I first raised on GPS Australia regarding some memory hassles I've been having with my new Dakota. Basically, I've discovered that some caches that I've downloaded are invisible. By invisible I mean that I can't find them on either the cache or waypoint list, and if...

Re: What's new on Geocaching Australia

I like the different colour thing. Excellent idea. Is there an explanation somewhere ( other than above) of what the different colours indicate? Wasn't hard to figure out so I never really went looking but I'm just curious as to whether I missed the explanation?

Re: Newbie thread: Which Garmin handheld GPS to buy?

Hmmm. Have ended up ordering a Dakota 20. Not on my original short list and I had to swallow my dislike of touch screens but seems to fit the bill in every other way, and perhaps I'll come to like the touch screen. Never know till you've lived with one for a while. Thought hard about the 62S, then w...

Re: Newbie thread: Which Garmin handheld GPS to buy?

Thanks for that. I'm pretty sure the 62 would meet my requirements but I'm wondering if I need to go that far. Were you moving up from another unit, or were you like me, pretty much starting from scratch?
Seems sad referring to my old 38 as scratch. It was the ducks nuts when I bought it in 1996!

Re: Newbie thread: Which Garmin handheld GPS to buy?

I'm yet another newbie completely confused by the range of Garmins on the market. I'm looking to upgrade my old 38. Priorities for me, in order of priority, would be; accuracy, ability to work under trees, ability to connect to a PC, waterproof, internal compass, price. On this basis it seems to me ...

Re: Is an old Gamin a good Garmin?

Thanks for the replies. I think that's good advice. Tree cover was always a problem with the 38, although at the time I got it, nearly 15 years ago, it was superior to most others on the market! I gave it a test run yesterday. Dusted off the cobwebs, put some new batteries in and put it outside to f...

Is an old Gamin a good Garmin?

Having just discovered, and joined, geocache, I'm wondering if my old Garmin 38 is accurate enough for the task? I'm noticing that people are reckoning on getting down to 5 metre accuracy. The last time I used my GPS for pinpoint work, I was reckoning on 50m accuracy but that was with selective avai...
