CaledD is on-the-mark. 1. Run Garmin MapManager and point it at the Shonky gmapi file that you downloaded. This will install the map in the correct location so that Garmin software on the Mac knows where it is (MapInstall, RoadTrip, TrainingCenter). 2. Run Garmin MapInstall and it will allow you to ...

Make sure to let us know which NZ ports you're going to be stopping in. If you want to arrange hooking up with NZ geocachers, http://forums.gps.org.nz/ is a good place to start ;)

One useful feature for boundaries is using them to create multiple GPX files. Using NZ as an example, we opted a long time ago to just have two gc.com states - North Island and South Island, rather than break down into regional councils which are (very loosely) like states in Australia. Now, if ther...

Enter your finds and logs as you go, without having to do a lot of cutting and pasting once you get back to civilisation (defined as "a good internet connection"!) Yep - I'm looking forward to using my Colorado and laptop to do this during the upcoming trip to Aussie. Catching up on ~380 logs from ...

Thanks for the pointers all! Next-G sounds good in terms of coverage. I'm wondering if it is possible to get a compatible USB modem (unlocked) here in NZ that we could bring over and just get the SIM and plan to work on the Next-G network. From our perspective Telstra would probably be the easiest t...

Being an emergency manager, when the Kiwi's did the Adelaide raid last December, I contacted one of the local SA Police that I knew and let him knew what we would be doing, gave him a description of the van, put signs like temporary courier vans on the windows, and provided the plate numbers. I unde...

Mobile data for a trip to Australia?

Coming over to Australia for a couple of weeks, and I'm wondering if it is practical and possible to get a prepaid SIM with a reasonable data allowance for checking email, weather etc on an iPhone 3G whilst travelling around caching :) Alternatively, I would consider a USB modem as an option. Can an...

well done, hope to see you when you hit Canberra. On that note, we've got a couple of events already in the system, and hoping to organise some more in Sydney and Melbourne. 16 or 17 DEC Melbourne - aiming for an event on either of these days 21 DEC Canberra GC1J9R2 Cachers from across the ditch 27...

Before I look at some of the other things, please note that country / region selection is now available. If you filter by country and / or region, you will only get back matches for that selection for caches and images on caches. This should assist somewhat. Nice! It does. :) Would it make more sen...

We might have to get these Kiwis to throw in a couple bucks for some more processing power soon. I'm sure as more of us start using the site, that won't be a problem. I think the namespace we are working on will certainly get a few more using it. ;) Also, just wondering about future tag usage again...

The ability to search multiple tags has now been addressed. The majority of the functionality was there, it was just a little bit screwed. It should work quite well now and you'll notice that the caches returned are formatted in the usual style, so you can see where they are, etc. Wow - that is muc...

The tag system is meant to be pretty free-form and abstract. When we proposed the system, users were quite specific in us not having pre-defined tags (or attributes). For sure. I fully understand that. Our use of rather unique terms is one means of bringing structure to the current system for our p...

I don't believe we need to seperate NZ tags from Aussie ones.....IMO "tags are tags" that shouldnt be location specific per se. Filtering by location is another option altogether. 8) As suggested, we'd like to see the country/state filtering made available for tags to avoid this issue :) Likewise, ...

Tags and a controlled taxonomy

What started as a discussion on multis and unknown caches in NZ has resulted in the creation of an experimental controlled namespace for tagging. Why a controlled namespace? Well we don't want three different names for biking activities (ok the are a little different) and would like some consistent ...

The term Guru came about because... Always good to hear the backstory - especially for us latecomers ;) With regards to the ability to self nominate, Geocaching Australia has a policy of free and open. Opt-in was seen as the best way for people who are willing to help others to volunteer their time...
