Re: Power Trails: an (ammo) can of worms

Under GC's own guidelines on cache saturation... Please don't hide a cache every 600 feet just because you can. The ultimate goals of the saturation guideline are to encourage you to seek out new places to hide caches rather than putting them in areas where caches already exist and to limit the num...

Re: Power Trails: an (ammo) can of worms

I was pondering the concept of power trails while on a bike ride a couple of weeks ago and I'd like to run an idea past the people on this forum. While not strictly a power trail in some senses, I see an opportunity for roughly 30-40 caches a few hundred metres apart along a linear rail trail. Road...

Re: Newbie thread: Which Garmin handheld GPS to buy?

I just brought the Oregon 300 for $329 plus $12 delivery to Adelaide from Johnny, it's so good that I ended up with a FTF today  Snap, except the first thing I got was a \:D/ DNF \:D/ on a simple cache because the arrow kept on pointing where I was walking and not where the cache was.. :oops...

YouTube video - Puzzle Geocaching 101 - Part 1

OK, I promised this last year after the Puzzle solving event I ran and now it's starting to happen. YouTube videos of the 2 hour talk I gave on solving Geocaching Puzzles. However, rather than just showing the video I've added a voice over to the PowerPoint to keep the graphics quality high. Format ...

Re: Brute forcing caches with checksums and approximate distance

I've just been having some fun trying to "solve" a puzzle that gives the clue, the checksums and the distance from the start coordinates. Surely there couldn't be too many that match could there? Well yes. With pairs of coordinates that match the checksum and are plus/minus 10 metres of the distanc...

Re: Smartgpx on a Nokia

Been using it on an Nokia E61 for 2 1/2 years. :)
All good although working out how to add images would be handy.
Currently use one 2500 Geocache export out of GSAK to populate it.

Re: endurance/geocaching events...

Hiking the Yurrebilla series in less than 24hrs, now you have my attention  , anyone interested? No one has done the 4 main caches in one day yet so there is bragging rights to be won there. I think the best is one section in a day. BTW, you'll most likely need training, there is 1600m of ...

Re: endurance/geocaching events...

In February I'll be helping to organise a 'Geogaine' event. This will be a crossover event for Rogaining and Geocaching, basically a 3 hour Rogaine with use of GPRs allowed. All on boot, maximum distance only 18 km or so. We have some reasonably organised ideas and rules sorted out. Still working ou...

Re: 2010 news years caching resolutions.

I'm also planning on *not* putting out all the caches for Adelaide's annual 'Mad May' month. \:D/ That doesn't actually fill me with the kind of joy I might have expected. Instead I am anticipating 'Fiendish February', 'Devilish December', 'Unanswerable August' or something equally as unpleasant. :...

Re: 2010 news years caching resolutions.

I'll be putting out my 100th unknown/puzzle hide this week which is a milestone for Australian cachers to the best of my knowledge. Last 70 caches hidden have all been puzzles. Also be the first team in Australia (maybe world, can't tell) to complete being a well rounded hider (hiding every difficul...

Once you have Google for finding roughly the object the cache is in you can use nearmap for the super resolution picture. Some of my bush caches in black ammo cans are now visible on nearmap.

Re: Is my Garmin eTrex-H really waterproof?

With the warmer months upon us there are a few caches accessible by boat or swim nearby to me. The temptation is to rely on my eTrex really being waterproof like they say an putting the lanyard around my neck and swimming out, but I'd hate to be wrong about it. Has anyone actually dunked their eTre...

Re: Bookmark list of Archived National Parks Caches

Another option is to convert them to Whereigo caches with a waypoint being the old final inside the NP and the new final outside of the park. Set up the Whereigo as a simple question that must be answered from some information available at the old final site like measured distance between two trees,...

Re: Nearmap rival to Google Earth?

The terrain map looks a lot like the side scanning radar images taken from the space shuttle? I think there might be legal issues with these images, just check out what you can see in some of our military bases. ..the same bases surrounded by huge signs prohibiting photography. Google Earth ...
