Re: Visiting from Denmark

Following on from Ian and Penny's comment, are you flying between cities? Driving say from Cairns to Ayers Rock is at least two days. Sorry for stressing the point, but it is surprising how many people come to Australia, and think they will drive from Brisbane to Cairns as a day trip (Its actually 2...

Re: overseas PQs

You can set up a PQ around co-ordinates. Work out the co-ordinates of where you will be and set them up. Travelling OS I just set up a PQ with the co-ordinates of the hotel, select you radius and go. Might be worth working our how many caches there are in Turkey, because if there aren't too many you...

Re: Those Badges and those Darned logs!

Gee you're a hard crowd to please. If there isn't a thread on too short logs, then there is one on too long logs. At the end of the day it's up to the finder to write about their journey as they see fit. If you want to read them, do so, of not just let them go. Life is too short to worry about if s...

Re: Those Badges and those Darned logs!

You're not the only one who dislikes waffle in logs for the sake of word count - unless it is reasonably interesting and about the cache experience it shouldn't be in the log. Funny we were just chatting about this recently! I remember following some cachers around NZ and all their logs said ...

Re: OpenStreetMaps now useless in a lot of areas.

Had a look in our area, some sections of our main roads are missing, but all the suburban streets remain, except that there are no names. Will have to look how to add the infromation and add the street names and missing main road sections.

Re: Geocaching Africa?

There is a powertrail in the Cradle of Humankind to the west of Jo'Burg, if thats your thing. The caches start with GPS (Gauteng Powertrail Series). I didn't do any as the lodge I was satying at was a bit too far away (only had walking shoes), but the route is popular with cyclists. I think there wa...

It may be worth asking the NZ Open GPS Project site, as it may be unaffected? http://nzopengps.org/

Re: OpenStreetMaps now useless in a lot of areas.

My bat senses must have been tingling, as I downloaded all the routable maps from OSM Australia. Happy to upload somewhere if someone has a hosting site or something, to share to all. That would be brilliant if we were able to do that somewhere. After a night's sleep I decided to do similarly only ...

Re: NZ Attendees...global roaming

Sorry this may have been mentioned already but what to do if you have iphone? Mine is on a plan so i would guess it is locked? Just go to the phone provider and ask them to unlock it. I have heard some will charge for it, but no charge when I had it done through Telstra. I had it done about 2 weeks...

Re: NZ Attendees...global roaming

Is the phone locked? Sometimes (I think most of the time) the phone is locked to a particular network by the provided. When I got the iphone there was an additional lock put on by apple. Might be worth checking. Once they have been removed I have had no trouble using other SIM including vodaophone i...

Re: NZ Attendees...global roaming

The iphone has a setting to switch it off, but I use a SIM from the country visiting. Most phone companies will have a deal for international visitors. In NZ, when you arrive at the airport purchase a NZ Vodaphone SIM card ( In Auckland its in the duty free area). Last trip I spent about $30AUD call...

Re: Good News Caching Story from NZ

The photo makes the rubbish pile a bit bigger than it was, but it was still a large heap of rubbish. I have been to a couple of CITOs but was still surprised at some of the stuff found. You expect bottles and cans, but a computer chair, engine parts etc! The grot award would have to go to the person...

Good News Caching Story from NZ

Our kiwi caching cousins got some good press recently from a CITO event held in Wellington. GC33F40.
