aussiecoder, riblit's correct: there is no all file yet. the nsw file is already half a megabyte so we haven't put an all.gpx file on our sydney server. once the new menu structure settles down, we'll get ou server in the USA going and serve the gpx files off that OK, I wasn't sure if it was intent...

Click the "all gpx" link on the cache page and you get a 404 (page not found) error.

Things a little quiet in Dubbo this week ?

There seems to be a rush of "Bronze Posts" over the last few days.

Excellent web page - I have seen it before, but always entertaining when it pops up.

Start your search here .... http://gps.chrisb.org/en/main.htm and you will see a link to "free maps at map centre" - there are 15 maps for australia - most of melbourne from what I can see. I used this method to get maps into my eTrex Legend before I bought the offical maps. I was pleased with the q...

What happens if you are sitting on the batteries and they explode (not unheard of) ?

I'd be quite happy if the batteries were well away from my bum - it's much easier to explain injuries to your ankles :)

I assume "no GPS" means "used paper maps".

If you could figure out how to fold the damn things, it wouldn't be so bad. Actually, you'd probably get a better idea of routes to the way points than squinting at a tiny GPS screeen.

From the "do as I say, not as I do" department. Any one person walking around will cause damage - if he's so worried about the sacred site - why is he there ! It seems to me this guy is peeved because his "exclusive club" has disolved. But he was able to find a group - with a name and a web site - a...

I say "no" to sponsorship of caches! Once you allow business to get invloved their spin doctors start to influence the shape of the whole sport, then the bean counters in suits arrive, before you know it there TV rights and major changes to the sport so it's TV friendly and the supporters get squeez...

I've fiddled with various software packages that talk NMEA and been able to have my Garmin speak to them. The big "gotcha" is that NMEA is usually 4800 baud and Garmin's native protocol is 9600 baud. You may need to match the baudrate (speed) of the software and the baudrate of the GPS. As NMEA is p...

One word of warning, I recently purchased the Australian Metroguide and the maps are two years old. The brand new freeway that runs near my house doesn't appear at all. From what I can see there is no update for it. It doesn't do routing. It looks like Garmin are spending all their time on the City ...

First Fleeters are different to First Settlers. Yes indeed. I am directly related to the first free settlers to Australia, the Roses. Roses Cottage still stands to this day. Oh, I sense a history cache coming on! I've got an Uncle Bob and an Uncle Bluey so I'm claiming the edge! EcoDave :) Hey, me ...

The Victoria Land Channel web site ( http://www.land.vic.gov.au/ ) might be able to get you started. If you zoom in enough this has quite detailed maps of Melbourne. If you use MapRequest ( http://maprequest.sourceforge.net/ - a shameless plug, I know) you can build up a larger map and save it as J...

If size is a problem, why not zip them - being XML and text they'd shrink right down !

I've done this before on web sites that need to download large text files.

You can be super smart and zip "on the fly" or "on demand" or batched up waiting for downloads.

Most yanks are OK when you can cut them away from the herd. As a group they have moments of absolute brilliance (landing in the moon) and times of monumental stupidity (Guntamo Bay). I think it's their failure to do the right things at the worst of times that gets them the bad reputation - this thre...
