Just change your coordinates to UTM - you can then use pythagorus's theorem in metres :) Inital searches show the conversion from Lat/Lon is worse than doing great circle. The are online tools to convert from lat/lon to UTM

and from UTM back to lat/lon

Makes using Pythagorus easy p...

Unfortunately, this passes coordinates back to the web server for processing (and it looks like it might be great circle back there somewhere).sc00t wrote:not sure if this is exactly what you are after but its interesting anyway

Calculate distance between lat/lon - not using great circle
I need to be able to calculate the distance between two close lat/lon pairs (close like under 10km).
I need to do this in a microprocessor where sin/cos are a real luxury.
Is there a "simple" alternative to great circle that I could use in this situation ?
thanks
dave

I know that the first few times we went out with xfking, he would invariably turn up with a saucepan. This happened on at least four occasions. Now, I _assume_ that you mean that he found saucepans when out cache hunting... But I can't shake the mental image of him turning up with GPSr in one hand,...

Found this site a while ago, http://www.embedtronics.com/ He has a nifty little device http://www.embedtronics.com/GPS/lassenSQ.html posibly not what you want directly, but could provide info or a way to a solution. Interesting. A little dated - it seems "every one" has a GPS board now - when this ...

If you are just thinking of something like that http://www.crystalfontz.com/products/632/thumb_632SS.jpg then maybe you should look at STAMP components, most of the processors have 1 or 2 serial interface built into the design. You can use one for serial GPS connection and the other to run the abov...

OT: Looking for some one who can design and build hardware
I'm a programmer - never met a programming language I couldn't use ! But I want to fiddle with these new "mouse gps"es that are appearing. I need someone to design and build a micro processor solution that will provide a user interface (LCD, buttons and LEDs) and long life power for these things. I ...
