Re: A motto to follow when placing caches

I just try to give people a smile when they get to gz/find the cache. Simple as that!
I like it!

Re: A motto to follow when placing caches

However, if you cut the term favourite out and use terms like "hide what you like to find", then we're back at square one. The inexperienced think an eclipse tin magnetically attached to a bridge is brilliant because they have limited experience and exposure to the richness of caches around them. I...

Re: A motto to follow when placing caches

I think you're confusing quality with preference. Someone may prefer to find a micro located in a pile of rubbish with a soggy logbook, but that's because they prefer rubbish. It's got nothing to do with the quality of the cache. I could argue that I like my rusty, smoke spewing, oil dripping car (n...

Re: A motto to follow when placing caches

I don't understand why you wouldn't want to put out the best quality cache that you can.
I also don't think your motivation should be to win Favourite points.
It should be about taking pride in your work ... and yourself.

Re: A motto to follow when placing caches

So glad that this topic is being discussed. I was speaking to another geocacher on the weekend. Normally he puts out high quality caches in great locations and nice containers etc. He was going to put out a new cache and then saw some of the ones have been featuring on http://www.progeocaching.com ....

Re: New to Geocaching

Most people don't manually enter co-ordinates. They do a Pocket Query from the geocaching.com. You have to be a Premium Member to do that. A GPX file will be emailed to you containing up to 500 waypoints. You then upload it to your GPS. Not sure if your GPS can read GPX files. If not, you'll have to...

Re: Survey Results

I got some free Google credits and ran a small adwords campaign that directed people to the survey. I believe that you normally get about a 10% response rate on surveys. This survey had over a 60% response. I had to shut it down before the clicks started costing too much! I think it shows that geoca...

Video Interviews in the US

I'm currently in the US and have been doing a series of interviews with well regarded geocachers.
Some of the cache containers these guys put out are incredible.
Here's the first one: http://www.progeocaching.com/videos/ama ... container/

I will put the others up as I do them.

Survey Results

I did this survey about what people like and don't like about cache sometime ago and finally got off my backside and put up the results. They are interesting but not surprising.

Re: Blackberry Geocaching?

Actually Blackstar does have a mapping feature but it uses Blackberry Maps which are not very detailed in Oz. Blackstar can't display WPs on Google Maps Mobile and there doesn't appear to be an easy way to do it. GMM is not as fully featured as Google Earth. I deleted BB maps from the unit when I in...

Re: UHF or VHF

The hang gliding fraternity uses UHF. The most common unit is the ICOM 40S or ICOM 41S handhelds. http://www.icom-australia.com/products/uhf/uhfcb_ic-41s.html These are 5W units that are switchable to 1W to save battery power. I also have a Uniden 1W handheld unit. The GME 3W units are excellent as ...

Re: When does a cache cease to be a cache and become rubbish?

I agree. You shouldn't remove a cache even if it's close to being a non-cache.

I have been known to totally replace the container and contents when the original was a sodden pile of bacteria-brewing scunge. However I only do that if the owner is not responding to requests to maintain it.

Re: 'Theft' of trackables - it's getting ridiculous.

Another explanation for *some* MIA TBs is that they are logged wrongly. I recently found a TB that was logged as being in a totally different cache. Sometimes when people do a load of caches in a day, they forget which cache a TB was actually placed in.
