A *good* product design will use standard cells *and* have internal charging circuitry to give the convenience of an internal proprietry battery solution that can be charged without removing that batteries. It's possible to get the best of both worlds. Magellan chose not to do that with this model ...

Does the Exporist series have the same silly power-on license agreement you have to accept each time you turn it on like the Meridian series? EcoDave :) Hello Eco Dave Since I started this thread, I have had a chance to look closer at the Explorist series. I didn't even get as far as the license ag...

Of course it should be noted that 12 channels is quite sufficient for the purposes of geochaching (and most other applications). Any more accurate and it would take all the fun out of hiding and finding. There are a few places near my home where the GPSr has a little trouble locking on. I could plug...

Like I said earlier. You are picking up a signal on the WAAS channel because that's what the GPS is supposed to do. It is where POR is transmitting right above us. But the signal is encrypted and in Australia there is no key for the GPS to understand it. If your GPS has WAAS disbabled it will still...

I think the Garmin Map60 series GPS works on the same principal. It's not so much a back light as it is a colour inversion. Seems to be quite effective though.

Picking up POR on your GPS in this country is the same as listening to any enctrypetd/scrambled radio signal. It will move your S meter and you'll hear something. But you won't be able to understand a thing. Why have your GPS wasting time and battery continaully trying to figure out what the signal ...

POR (over the Pacific) is just above the horizion, you were on or near the coast, atmospheric conditions were good enough to facilitate reception.
I actually read somewhere that POR is about to be taken out of service and replaced with a more powerful bird. In fact the launch was supposed to ha...

Gee!! I have been at work doing an 18 hour shift. Hasn't this thread come along. I think because of all the fancy lingo and inclusions on the newer GPS units, one can be forgiven for being lost as to what is working and what's not. Suffice to to say that WAAS is NOT operational in Austrtalia and the...

I'm surprised at you Swampy, for falling into this one.
I'll let you guys read up on WAAS, from the following link. http://www.gpsoz.com.au/WAAS.htm
The receiver may be WAAS capable, but in Australia you should turn it off because there is no signal present and it will only degrade the accura...

18 Wheels and a dozen birds

On a recent trip driving to Adelaide we had to cross the Hay plain. Miles and miles or dead flat featureless terrain. Only the shuddering draft of giant passing trucks breaks the monotony. But then something special. I glanced down at our GPS and saw it was picking up 12 birds and all at full satura...

Hi again GIN51E I am not saying that Explorist unit is a bad performer, far from it. If the Unit presents no issues for you then of course you have found a great unit and I am sure it will give you years of great service just as my Magellan has for me. I have always been a Magellan user and have oft...
