Re: Cache difficulty/terrain ratings

The reviewers do not agree with you. My two caches that required paddling were rejected initially and were only published when I changed the terrain rating to 5. The one terrain 5 cache I've done said in its description that a kayak or a canoe was required. Thus I couldn't get there by walking. As ...

Re: DNFs Logged vs. Actual DNFs

There are obviously at least three schools of thought, and I don't think they're ever going to agree. 1. The purist "I went to GZ. I didn't find the cache. Logged DNF." 2. The pragmatist "I went to GZ. I had a half hearted or interrupted look; it's probably here but I didn't find it. No DNF logged."...

Re: Android Geocaching Apps

Anybody who finds typing on an Android keyboard tiresome should try Swype. It makes keyboard input a pleasure, so much so that I tend do all my logs on my HTC Desire now, in the field using c:geo, and my preference is to do longish logs. Sorry iPhone users, no version for you yet. http://www.swype....

Re: Android with a excellent GPS ?

I'll follow up if I exchange it and the subsequent unit stands up to geocaching. In the mean time it's decide what cache next with the phone (which means its GPSr is on and eating power), and type the coordinates into the old but reliable Geko 201. :D Well, went back to the shop (Johnny Appleseed i...

Re: Android with a excellent GPS ?

Longer answer: providing the Android phone you pick has Bluetooth with the SPP protocol included (it should be there, unless the vendor removed it) you can use an external GPSr logger such as a Holux M-241 to get a high sensitivity GPSr that works with your phone. I'm using such a combination with ...

Re: Android phones for geocaching

So I just destroyed the screen on my Garmin asus a50 by dropping it on a footpath. While I realise that no phone will ever be as awesome as it was I can't find anymore for sale anywhere and if I can get the screen fixed it would cost more than the phone. Therefore I've decided I figure I might look...

Re: Android with a excellent GPS ?

Are there any new Androids with an excellent GPS chipset in it, eg garmin asus a50 level ? Short answer: "I dunno." Longer answer: providing the Android phone you pick has Bluetooth with the SPP protocol included (it should be there, unless the vendor removed it) you can use an external GPSr logger...

Re: Android Geocaching Apps

I'm relatively new to geocaching. Downloaded Groundspeak app for my Samsung Galaxy tab and I've found nearly all the caches at random sites we visit. My only problem is that the compass is very jumpy and not accourate. I tend to stick to the map and zoom in to within a few metres of the cache. Baby...

Re: Android Geocaching Apps

[ I've got a HTC wildfire and am running c:geo as well an my battery lasts a whole day easily (I have wi-fi and mobile internet turned off and GPS turned on) I'm reasonably happy with it, c:geo is a little slow sometimes but other than that all good - I do still take printouts for multi-caches thou...

Re: Android Geocaching Apps

I was surprised by the big improvement on battery when you turn off 3G, I almost doubled my battery life with 3G off, so perhaps you should try "cache" or download the data and use it in a off-line mode or perhaps just turn on 3G occasionally when you need it. Interesting, I'm going to try this: I'...

Re: Trying to update firmware green eTrex Venture

Using the Mac and OS X is not going to work. :( Using a WIndows system (XP or later should be fine) is supposed to work after you have installed the specific USB-serial Prolific drivers to match your cable. If you don't still have them, I think I do (I just updated a Geko 201!, yes, really) then I c...
