Re: Oddball 'communities'

There's a surprisingly vibrant community based on creating graphic effects and/or chip music on old computers (especially the Commodore 64).

If that bush is in a NSW national park, then that is all you are allowed.

Re: Geocaching Devices

A stand-alone GPS unit might be OK in the city or for short hikes, but if you are doing longer walks, especially if it's on faint or non-existant tracks, I strongly recommend you get a smart phone loaded with the 1:25K topo maps, along with a decent case and a few spare batteries. I use the "Memory ...

Re: How to list a new trig?

Can you see the trig from the road or do you have to actually leave the roadway and traverse up to the trig? If the TP (or the remains of the TP) can be seen and photographed from the road that would good as no crossing of the farmer's property would be required. The trig is a little under 100m fro...

How to list a new trig?

Howdy Is there an particular process or etiquette for listing a new trig point (compared to listing any other new type of cache)? I visited a spot yesterday that was marked on the topo map as a trig (called Wangendarry, in the Nattai national park) and when I climbed the hill to check it out, there ...

Re: "Throwdown" or "angel cache"?

PS - no need to feel bad about any one cache getting archived, there are plenty more fish in the sea (nearly 10,000 caches in Vic, according to the GCA stats page).

Plus archiving an unmaintained cache lets a more responsible Cache Owner put a new cache out.

Re: "Throwdown" or "angel cache"?

looking at the logs for that cache, there's a "Needs Maintenance" from 2011 that appears to not have been actioned. So given the description of container, and the concerns about the waypoints being out of date, I strongly recommend logging a "Needs Archiving" and letting a reviewer take a look. The ...

Re: "Throwdown" or "angel cache"?

There's a note on the cache page: ***********************NOTICE******************************************* NOTE: This Cache has been reported by our last visitor as somewhat DAMP. Probably the container (sistema) needs replacing. Unfortunately I no longer live in the area, but I would love for this...

Re: "Throwdown" or "angel cache"?

BTW I was involved in an episode which leads me to believe a 'needs archiving' is the best approach - related to http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=a583897d-f504-470d-bd3e-ca94afe6d33b Situation was: - A cache was placed (in a really beautiful area , but what in retrospect was no...

Re: "Throwdown" or "angel cache"?

My take on this is, if the CO isn't maintaining the cache, then it should be archived (and ideally a responsible cacher would go remove the remains to reduce the amount of geolitter). If it's a really great spot and someone who is willing and able to maintain it wants to put a new cache in that area...

Re: GEOCACHE COORDINATES

Also, you can ignore the bit about WGS84 datum. What it means is, over the years there have been a few different standards (called datums) for specifying coordinates, and the same coordinate in different datums can be hundreds of metres from each other. But nowadays everything (including smartphones...

Re: GEOCACHE COORDINATES

Just to be confusing, there are a couple of different websites with caches on them. One is geocaching.com (which is based in the USA and has cache listings from all over the world, including Australia) The other is geocaching.com.au (where you are now, and ONLY has australian caches on it) The geoca...

Re: "Throwdown" or "angel cache"?

I am all for replacing a cache that has been found in a damaged state, especially as tronador says, ones in remote areas. I can imagine circumstances in which no cache was not found, but there is clear evidence of where it was originally placed, and in those circumstances, placing a new cache may be...

Re: Your geocaching goals 2013

1. Attempt "In The Loop" from the north (via Wentworth Cave - only once the Fire Trail to Donnas Track reopens)
2. Beat Rogerw3 to more trigs (and I mean real trigs, not water towers!)
3. Find some more interesting spots in the mountains
