Ah--am breathing better now, did a proper master reset -hold down TLH corner when starting, yes erase all user data- and presto all caches back again, now to reset my settings.

Oh dear, updated and uploaded a pocket query early this morning--all good, new caches in the Oregon, checked Garmin web updater and new software available, version 4.5. Also tested this out this morning--found my way and it worked well. Thanks to who ever organised it, sure beats manual recording.
