Re: Anybody seen such a trig before?

If it is anything to do with surveying I would imagine the box on the top contains a mount for a theodolite. Probably constructed to get a view to other trigs over the trees. Normal trigs would have a point on the ground under the tower to erect a tripod & theodolite.

Gen 2 is already here. Got one and seen another in a gym. Both devolved versions of series 1 pokes.

Re: 2016 / 2017 Game

F2F was a great game back when I started caching. You needed to find caches based on various themes, so had to be creative in how to justify that the cache met the theme. But more importantly was scored on difficulty and terrain. So a theme matched 5x5 was a big scorer. They were the days of extreme...

Re: Is there a point to puzzle caches?

My puzzles are an exercise in navigation, which is what I thought caching, and GPS use in general, was about (we all play the game according to our own rules). Very few people seem to get them.

Re: Geelong Accommodation

Depends on the style of accomodation you want, but I like the Torquay Tropicana Motel. It's a good country style motel, and a lot cheaper than anywhere I have stayed in metropolitan Geelong.

Re: Mass logging by donuts4711

I had a post on one of my disabled caches in SA. The finder had nearly 3000 finds. By the time I worked out it was bogus and deleted the post he had over 3000. Checked 3 hours later and the finds was around 2800, so it looks like lots of us are deleting. But if you are going to do an April Fool at l...

Re: What's the difference between a trig point and a survey mark

I had trouble working out what constituted a trig station when I was in NZ earlier this year. Unlike the hierarchy in Australia they describe their survey marks in terms of what "order" they fall into (see http://www.linz.govt.nz/data/geodetic-system/datums-projections-and-heights/coordinate-and-he...

Re: Toolbox - Coordinates

Decimal minutes at the equator is good to 2m, better at higher latitudes. This is better than an un-corrected GPSr can define. Decimal seconds would be 30mm or better precision, which is the domain of professional surveyors. Taking into consideration most hiders (and finders) almost never consult DO...

Re: Is this typical Aussie style?

There was some discussion here a few years ago where the consensus was that a traditional cache should require no additional equipment or knowledge. A cache that required the finder to have 2 litres of water to access the cache was put up as this type. It was considered this should be a mystery. The...

Re: How many people still visit the forums

I'm here almost every day. It's a pretty lonely place. Once I spent half an hour or more per day on the forums. Now I go for days without seeing a post. I have a Facebook account but really don't understand it. I haven't found an Australian caching area like the forums. As a result I've lost quite a...

Re: What is the word?

Seems Toposcope was the word you were looking for. From studying surveying in the 70s an old method used up to the 19th century was to set up a flat surface on a tripod and make a diagram as found on the Toposcope. This was called a Plane Table. So a Toposcope is a permanant Plane Table. Worth notin...

I've seen mine on both GC & GCA. But not in the last 5 or 6 years. I suppose as the database of photos increases the probability decreases.

It's not unusual for a delay of several days for a log on GG to come across to GCA. It's not instant.
