Re: Trig points - a general discussion
I'd certainly encourage trig DNF's to be reported to the relevant state body as the research I've done would suggest they're more interested in the trigs we can't find than the ones we can as I believe there is a genuine need and intent on their behalf to maintain them. I've briefly perused some dir...

Re: Trig points - a general discussion
OK, so there have been a number of ideas tossed around as to what does, and does not constitute a trig… But no definitive criteria… So maybe some criteria can be set? Now, I’m by no means an authority on trigs (although I have found about 70, of which I have originally published around 20), so here...

Re: Trig points - a general discussion
I would like to know what is required for a “trig” to be published as a trig? I'd much prefer to go & find TP5440 & hopefully will. Tuena, I just realised your TP5440 is the Mt Palerang trig? Awesome!!! Did that one. The view from there is endless!!! While you're in the neighbourhood don't forget t...

Re: Trig points - a general discussion
I think we can scrap the 'if it aint on Geoscience it aint a trig' theory. I've just looked at their MapConnect web page which shows trig stations. According to Geoscience, many of what I think we would all agree (according to us) were definitely trig stations (big white quadriped with black discs o...

Re: Trig points - a general discussion
I would like to know what is required for a “trig” to be published as a trig? When the decision was made to add Trig Points to the site the data was obtained from GeoScience Australia. GeoScience Australia could therefore be seen as the bench mark for deciding whether an object is a trig. I have se...

Re: Trig points - a general discussion
LOL -pjw - by your OWN rules as above and from your previous trigs (Sparrow & Reedy), the Gungahlin trig you "found" - FAILS. You found neither old evidence of the trig nor evidence of a "Trig Plate". LOL, ROFL. I DID, and I photographed such. The Gungahlin one - you need to take a photo as appropr...

Re: Trig points - a general discussion
I disagree with the focus on the marker. In my opinion a trig is recorded/defined as such by the individual/authority that assigned that specific point on the earths surface as a trig point/station. We all know that there are numeorus trigs that don't have any visible evidence on the ground as they'...

Re: Trig points - a general discussion
That's the way I look at. The 'caches' are already there and their existence is no secret. It just requires the effort to get to them. And you're right, in some cases it's quite a bit of effort to get there. For me that's part of the attraction. I wouldn't be doing trigs if they were all drive by jo...

Re: Trig points - a general discussion
Exactly. If I find nothing there that is clearly intended to identify the location of the trig then it's listed as DNF. A yellow post with the name of the trig on it and a bolt concreted in the ground at the exact position a trig point is recorded as being by the ACT Planning Authority is more than ...

Re: Trig points - a general discussion
I was not aware of those other categories but that's good to see. If you want to see an interesting debate re trigs have a look at the 'Gungahlin Trig'. The self appointed trig police have declared war on me again. Sad really.

Re: Trig points - a general discussion
Exactly!!! For me it's primarily about the journey, the challenge, fitness, honing my navigation skills (which I need for my work), great views of the landscape and some history. I've only done trigs and currently ain't interested in mainstream GC.

Re: anyone using map & compass not GPS?
As someone who does nothing other than trig points I use maps heavily to identify my targets an in planning my route. Once you get beyond the suburbs and into the wild country nothing beats a map for planning you route and looking at options. I'm a very firm believer that all of these tools are supp...

Re: Trig points - a general discussion
What constitutes a trig point certainly remains a hot topic but my view is that if is designated as a trig point by an appropriate authority then so be it. Some have debated some of my finds in the ACT which don't look like a traditional trig but are designated as such by the ACT planning authority....

Re: Trig points - a general discussion
There's plenty of trigs down here in the ACT. They range from drive by jobs within Canberra to serious undertakings out in the nasty country of the Brindabella's and Namadgi. I'm slowly working my way through them. I'm lucky enough to have access to printed topo maps from work and have found an easy...

Re: Trig question
For those interested in sourcing some Trig Stations in the ACT the following link takes you to the ACTPLA website with a further link to the Survey Mark Database. Trigonometrical Stations are identified in the database by the code "MC". http://www.actmapi.act.gov.au/commands/viewlinkedinfo/surveycon...
