Re: Newbie thread: Which Garmin handheld GPS to buy?

Wow, what are Garmin doing? A comparison of the 450 and 550 shows that the only difference between the two is the 3.2 megapixel on-board camera on the 550, and that doesn't have optical zoom. In effect, you would be paying AUD$150 more (RRP) for the camera! I reckon that the 450 will effectively ki...

Re: TrigPointing

Greetings, My input may make things clear or cloudy. A benchmark is a general term for a survey mark of known vertical value. The vertical value:- can be a published Continental/National Geoid value such as the Australian Height Datum (AHD) [Note, your GPS unit will give you an world spheroidal valu...

Re: Newbie thread: Which Garmin handheld GPS to buy?

I have found out how to prove/support my earlier post, i.e "I'd add a picture if I knew how."

Re: Provision for UTM co-ords when cache found

Following up on the theme of this thread. I was out caching today with my O550 and discovered a tile displaying Lats & Longs for the dashboard while the datum setting for the GPSr was UTM. No need to navigate thru the menus to change the GPSr datum to display Lats & Longs. This is an added feature I...

Re: Provision for UTM co-ords when cache found

At the moment we have no plans to convert from/to UTM Geocaching internationally typically only uses WGS84 Degrees Decimal Minutes, and we don't really plan on changing that at our end, it's easier for us to work with. I'll have a look and see if there's any advantages to us also supporting UTM and...

Re: Provision for UTM co-ords when cache found

Why do you need to enter coordinates when logging a find? Unless it is a moveable or lopcationless, there shouldn't be a need, and both of those are rare types. My first attemp to reply didn't seem to appear, so I'll try again. I may have been a little misleading with my first post. I did not enter...

Re: Provision for UTM co-ords when cache found

Just guessing here, you are caching off maps using the supplied UTM coords instead of a GPS? And I am guessing you need to post found coordinates if the location is off and you want to post a correction? (as I can't see why you would need to otherwise) Not being part of the development team so can'...

Re: Survey Marker (Benchmark) Listing?

For Victoria, if you want a map you can go to: http://services.land.vic.gov.au/maps/lassi.jsp zoom in to your local area , then Select "Build Map" and then select "Survey Marks" under "Survey Information" When you refresh the map there should be a whole lot of markers with names like Mordialloc PM ...

Provision for UTM co-ords when cache found

I'm a flat earth kind of guy and am wondering if a provision can be made for entering UTM co-ords when logging a found cache.
Geodetic co-ords are fine since this is the 'native' mathimatical system, however they are a pain to deal with, i.e they are curved lines on a (plane) map.

Re: Survey Marker (Benchmark) Listing?

" There are approximately 110,000 permanent survey marks (PM).....(at March 2009) " in Victoria. This should keep GPSr's busy. (source:-h ttp://services.land.vic.gov.au/landchannel/content/surveyMarkIntroduction) Each state is required to keep a database of registered marks. A registered mark can be...

Re: Newbie thread: Which Garmin handheld GPS to buy?

Just given my new O550 a run. Very pleased :D . Getting within 2m of point (Good GPS site). Garmin quotes an accuracy of +/-3m.
(I'd add a picture if I knew how.)
Has some great features for which you pay for, i.e. 3 axis compass.
O300 will be just as good with the core GPS functions.
